Congresswoman Janelle Bynum (OR-05) was honorarily sworn in as the U.S. Representative for Oregon’s Fifth Congressional District by the Honorable Judge Raymond Crutchley in Bend on Saturday morning.
With this historic swearing-in, Rep. Bynum became the first Black Member of Congress in Oregon’s history.
Following her swearing-in, Rep. Bynum delivered heartfelt remarks about her journey to Congress and outlined her priorities.
Local leaders including State Senator Anthony Broadman, State Representative Jason Kropf, and Bend Mayor Pro Tem Megan Perkins also addressed the crowd, along with other community members and local leaders from Deschutes County.
The ceremony, held at Oregon State University–Cascades, highlighted the commitment of Bend and Redmond to work together across local, state, and federal levels of government.
Rep. Bynum, a working mother, engineer, small business owner, and former State Legislator, is focused on lowering costs, driving economic development, and improving education and safety for children. She serves on the Financial Services Committee and is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and the New Democrat Coalition.
