FBI – Lineage – Review : It Runs In The Family

Spoilers below :

This episode starts with two girls entering onto a tour bus for a famous music artist, everything seems normal until the bus is stopped by multiple gunmen who take down the entire bus.

We then see Isobel (Alana De La Garza) and Philip (Tom Cavanagh) discussing celebrating her retiring from the FBI after 20 years of service, seeing Isobel talk about the FBI and how much of her life it has taken up is such an emotional scene to watch. She asks her husband how he knew it was time to retire. His response of “I just felt that my part in the work was finished” seems to really hit Isobel based on her facial expressions.

7 people were killed on the bus including Lewis Thornton (Chase Cruz) also known as music artist Turnkøt, the police turning the case over to the FBI due to the lyrics used within his songs was an incredibly smart decision.

OA (Zeeko Zaki) and Scola (John Boyd) finding out that the girls were only 16 was honestly heart-breaking, two young lives lost so soon. OA suggesting that the crime scene seemed personal brought us right to our first suspect – Tariq Ward (Curt Morlaye) Turnknøt’s Rap rival who released multiple distracks against him. One talking about how TurnKnøt would be in a hearse and pulling out his gun on him.

OA, Scola and Rhodes (Emily Alabi) go to arrest Tariq and find themselves having to arrest him in front of a crowd after he tries to assault Scola. OA’s interview of him reveals that the feud between himself and turnknøt is only a money ploy. He gives away the name Jeff Mills (Peter Jacobson), Turnknøt’s manager, as a person of interest. His tip off about the tour bus being electric prompted Scola and Rhodes to check the bus out, finding a hatch where a large stash of pink cocaine was stored. This changes the course of the episode showing it wasn’t just because of unresolved rap rivals.

Scola and Rhodes bring in Jeff Mills for questioning who is less than helpful to the investigation, putting on a performance for the cameras, choosing to finally give up his suppliers when he is promised protection.

The Solano’s are a family run business that deal with pink cocaine, Jubal (Jeremy Sisto) mentions real life instances where the drug was used to show the severity of the usage, they discover that the drug was moved last night and have sent OA, Scola and Rhodes to check the place out.

Whilst clearing the place they are shot at by multiple men, but retaliate with fire and manage to capture all three of the suspects, however the question still remains who are they?

We are quickly updated that they are the same people who stole the pink cocaine and killed the bus passengers, however an interesting development happens when one of the men is linked to the Grippo crew who supposedly shut down their operations, which is where they find out that the son of the family has been running the drug operation in secret while his dad is in hiding.

Isobel wanting to be the one to interview him shows how much she has obsessed over this drug family; she admits that Sonny’s dad has been in hiding for the last 16 years.

Sonny (Rob Raco) was originally interviewed alone before the meeting was interrupted by Billie (Kate Eastman).

Billie was not only Sonny’s sister but also his attorney and would do anything to get him away from their father, she had changed her last name due the damage caused by her father, most prominently her mother dying as a result of him.

Billie changing her name to distance herself from her father and his way of life showed how desperately she wanted away from the situation, her own mother was collateral damage. She reveals within the conversation that Jack Grippo (Nick Sandow) would never give up his place on the throne.

The feds manage to work out that Sonny and Jack have been communicating using the old method of draft emails on the same account with two different logins, they work out that Jack will be making a return to America from Cuba. His plan is to take over the Solano’s operation. Isobel plants a tracker on Sonny’s car to have surveillance in case he meets with his father.

Jubal then has a conversation with her about when she first met Jack Grippo, we find out that she first met him in 2009 which was 4 years into her lengthy time at the agency, one of her instructors at Quantico was murdered in their attempt to catch him. It makes perfect sense why Isobel has been so hell bent on catching this guy.

Scola and Rhodes follow Sonny to a private airfield in order to catch Jack before he is fully into the country. OA makes his way into the private airfield, being caught by one of Grippo’s security men, having a tussle with him before running after the getaway car. Before they can make their escape, Scola and Rhodes pull in front of their exit. They learn that Sonny diverted their attention south from the north where his father would be making his entrance.

The small interaction we see between Jubal and Isobel sees her reveal that she may be retiring for her 20, however they gain new information about Billy being the one to book the decoy flight, arriving at her office to question her on the development.

Billie claims she wishes to get her brother away from her father by agreeing to wear a wire whilst talking to her brother as long as he has full immunity.

Rhodes and Scola get Billie ready with the wire in her necklace, Billie manages to claw the information out about where her father is hiding, at “Tom’s place”, however I could not have wanted to scream ‘stop touching the necklace’ more. It was so clear that she was not doing it out of nervousness, and she was doing it to bait Sonny into noticing it.

Sonny ripped the necklace from her neck identifying that it was a bug, forcing Scola, OA and Rhodes to respond, however within the time of the response she manages to stab him with a letter opener. I knew right in that moment she was up to no good, when Scola stated that it doesn’t have to all be for nothing a small smirk appeared on her face.

She gives Scola the information that Tom’s place is a bar that Jack uses as a front. Scola enters the bar alone while the rest of the team complete surveillance outside. Whilst inside Scola’s earpiece has some feedback moments before Jack places a gun at the small of his back ordering him to drop the earpiece. Scola follows instructions and drops the bug watching as Jack crushes it under his foot then forces Scola into the basement.

OA orders the team to move in, ending up in a bar fight and losing his gun during it, thankfully he didn’t need it and was able to overpower the crew member before picking his gun back up. The team do a full sweep of the bar unable to locate Jack and Scola due to not having the full map of the bar.

Whilst being kept held hostage Scola reveals to Jack that Billie killed her brother in ‘self-defence’ and that he gave Billie the information of Tom’s place before he died, which her father sees right through since Billie knows that Tom’s place is actually a bowling alley. Jack tries to make his escape but ends up in a tussle with Scola and being pushed backwards into the firing line of OA.

We then cut to Isobel who is reviewing the footage from Sonny’s death when Scola comes in with his suspicions and confirmation that Billie is now running a Grippo-Solano alliance.

The final scene of this episode was so perfect, I am so glad that Isobel changed her mind on retiring, the show really wouldn’t be the same without her and neither would the characters. “Drinking to the chase” was the ideal ending quote.

Did you think that Isobel was going to quit, or did you always know she would end up staying?
