Hollywood has plenty of famous siblings, but few are as effortlessly iconic as Dakota and Elle Fanning. So when Dakota, 31, dropped a never-before-seen throwback in honor of Elle’s 27th birthday, the internet couldn’t help but take notice.
“Our first photo together 27 years ago today,” the Man on Fire star captioned the sweet shot on Wednesday, April 9 via Instagram. “I was asleep in the delivery room during Elle’s birth, so I can really say we have been together from the start. What an honor that has been, and I can’t wait for the rest. HBD @ellefanning I love you 🌪️.”

In the photo, 4-year-old Dakota is smiling at the camera in a pink T-shirt while cradling baby Elle, who’s wrapped in a hospital blanket and wearing a tiny hat. Their mom, Heather Arrington, is sitting beside them in a gown, holding both girls in her arms. The image appears to be a photo of a printed snapshot, capturing the moment just after Elle’s birth.
“I love you my Cody!!!!” the Maleficent icon wrote in the comments section — she also reposted the post on her Instagram Story.
But Elle wasn’t the only one getting emotional.
“I love how close you are and how much you love each other,” one fan gushed.
“This might be my favorite picture ever!” another commented.
“Sweetest photo, sweetest sisters 👯♀️🎈🎁,” chimed in a third.
“Such a cute little face! Happy Birthday Elle 🎂,” someone else added.
This isn’t the first time the internet’s been treated to a Fanning sisters throwback.
In March 2024, Dakota stopped by The Tonight Show, where host Jimmy Fallon played a Halloween home video of the Watchers actress and Elle as kids.
“Go get your wig back on!” Dakota — dressed as a pink cat — shouted at her little sister in the clip, grabbing back the eyebrow brush Elle was trying to use. Without skipping a beat, Elle, dressed as a Raggedy Ann doll, put the wig back on her head.
“I actually remember that moment,” Dakota told Fallon, 50. “But I don’t remember being that bossy and that mean.”
