Every single person in the great state of North Carolina got spoiled last weekend with the best weather the Tar Heel State has to offer. This weekend, well, not so much. It’s going to be a lot cooler than last weekend. But as always, there’s a ton of great stuff happening out there.
There are dozens of Easter egg hunts around the state to make the kids happy. Some communities have early Earth Day events over the weekend too. For the sports fans out there, this weekend the Hurricanes will play their last home games of the regular season. Minor league baseball is also back in season for North Carolina’s nine teams.
This weekend also has some great music on tap all across the state. And filed under highbrow/lowbrow, the acclaimed Broadway musical The Book of Mormon, written by the creators of South Park, is at DPAC in Durham.
Pimento Cheese Festival
On Saturday, Cary will host a Pimento Cheese Festival. It includes food trucks with unique pimento cheese creations, live music, beer and wine and more pimento cheese.
Four words for this event stand out: pimento cheese sculpting contest.
From the organizers: “Pimento cheese is a southern delicacy worth celebrating. Come enjoy the nation’s only festival dedicated specifically to pimento cheese! Enjoy live music and other activities at Downtown Cary Park, grab a drink from local breweries, and taste some of the best pimento cheese samples from local restaurants. You can even test your skills in the pimento cheese sculpting contest.”
The cheesy festival runs 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Downtown Cary Park.

Hurricanes at home for two more regular season games
The Carolina Hurricanes have two more home games left in the regular season. They face off against the New York Rangers at 3 p.m. Saturday. The Canes host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday at 5 p.m.
The Canes are currently second in their division, so there will be playoff Hockey coming back to Raleigh. The Hurricanes will face the New Jersey Devils in the first round of the playoffs. That date has not been set.
Early Easter and Earth Day festivities
Easter isn’t until April 20 this year, and Earth Day is two days later, but there are events planned across the state to mark both days.
There are dozens of Easter egg hunts across North Carolina Saturday. In Charlotte, there’s one at Prosperity Park. In Raleigh, it’s at Pullen Park. Dare County is hosting its 28th annual Eggstravaganza at the Family Recreation Park & Youth Center in Kill Devil Hills.
Greensboro will have an Easter egg hunt at LeBauer Park and in Winston-Salem at Midway Town Park.
There are lots of other Easter egg hunts going on Saturday. Check your local Parks and Recreation Department for public events.
Charlotte’s annual Earth Day event is also happening Saturday at The Independent Picture House at 4237 Raleigh St. The event will include exhibitors, electric vehicles, kids activities from PBS NC, film screenings and panel discussions.
The City of Kings Mountain is hosting another Earth Day event with lots of activities for kids at the Kings Mountain Gateway Trail Saturday. There will be music, a butterfly release, a safari park with exotic animals and other activities.
Grifton Shad Festival
The 53rd Grifton Shad Festival is already in full swing in Grifton. It’s a small town in eastern North Carolina near the Neuse River, where shad fishing was once (and still is) a big part of life.
The festival features amusements and rides, a parade on Saturday, fish stew, local crafts and vendors, live music and fireworks.
“The Grifton Shad Festival, beginning in 1971, is one of the most time-honored and longest running festivals in North Carolina. It is the oldest festival in Pitt County and the second oldest in eastern North Carolina,” according to festival organizers.
“The Town of Grifton has even been recognized by the NC State Legislator as the Official Shad Capital of North Carolina,” organizers said. “The Shad Festival stands for fun and fellowship and working together toward a common goal.”
