Today’s Connections Hints & Answers For March 29, 2025 (Puzzle #657)

If you are attempting to find a plan for today’s Connections puzzle, you might need a witness who knows how this puzzle works. Luckily, I am that witness, and I can tell you that this one was quite difficult for me. However, there was a big cultural landmark in this puzzle that I apparently had never come across, despite being in school for nearly a quarter of a century. Really put my schooling into perspective when I put it that way, but existential crisis aside, here are the hints you need to get by.

If you need a lighter, easier puzzle to wash this one down after, try out the NYT’s Tiles puzzle. If you need something that you don’t have to think about and can be fairly easily dealt with, Tiles doesn’t have any words, and you just have to wipe the tiles away one at a time. I used to be obsessed with Mahjong, and this satisfies a lot of the same itch without as big of a board to solve. This makes it fun without taking too much of my day.

Today’s Connections Category Hints

MARCH 29 #657

I started today’s puzzle feeling confident, and then slowly lost it over time. None of the categories are definition-based, and one in particular featured something that, according to Google anyway, should have been obvious but wasn’t to me. If you did recognize it, you are fortunate. However, that is not the only tough category, and you should be cautious as you attempt to solve this one so as not to waste guesses.

  • One category is about something you might use if you are at a particularly exquisite establishment
  • One category is about four different kinds of the same article
  • One category is about four different words used in a popular phrase – or at least a once popular phrase
  • One category is about four things that all released during the same time frame

SILVER

This one was something I danced along the edge of for a while. I kept coming back to CRYSTAL and SILVER and wondering what was going on with them. I recognized LINEN as something a little fancier, but figuring out how to connect all of those things was a little more difficult. I finally was able to get this one when I decided to go for it despite my hesitation, and I was thankful to see that it was a correct guess. However, by that time, I only had one guess left and the last two categories to go.

CARGO

I got this one first. I looked at BOXER and COMMANDO a couple of times, and it eventually did lead me to the right answer despite guessing wrongly that COMMANDO was involved. However, it still took a minute and one too many guesses to get it. I didn’t lose right away, but it did leave me with a little too few guesses to feel comfortable about the rest of the puzzle, and I was quite lost on the others.

PLAN

Supposedly, this is the most famous palindrome in the world. I had never heard of it, and I have been to writing school. None of my history or english teachers seemed to care about palindromes, though, as far as I can remember. I think we briefly heard about it, but I don’t remember any of the examples, and it took me a little while to relearn what a palindrome was. It’s an odd thing to get skipped over, but I think it’s likely more common in poetry, which was a subject I avoided in school as much as possible.

WITNESS

Of these, the only one I had any idea was a movie was CLUE, and the rest I might have heard of but don’t stand out as movie titles in my head. CLUE, however, is an absolute joy and something that will live in my brain rent-free for the rest of my life. I was thinking about it, because I always am, but without that much knowledge that the rest of these words were also movies, I did not catch it.
