There IS life on Mars

This week’s top comics to buy for April 3 sees the finale of one of my favorite monthly series in recent memory — Traveling to Mars. I may try to write a longer review of this full series at some point, but this week, it sticks the landing. More below, along with the usual weekly lists…enjoy!

And oh hey, my Kickstarter comic I’ve been teasing in this space for weeks is live now! If you could take a look and consider supporting or just sharing the link across social media, I’d be eternally grateful!

Top Comics to Buy for April 3, 2024

Kneel Before Zod #4
Writer: Joe Casey
Artist: Dan McDaid
Colorist: David Baron
Letterer: Troy Peteri
Publisher: DC Comics
THE AFTERMATH OF WAR! The brutal invasion of New Kandor has cost its supreme ruler everything he holds dear! But there will be a reckoning–and General Zod will not rest until he has enacted his bloody revenge! Let the universe tremble as Casey and McDaid deliver the newest chapter of DC’s darkest cosmic odyssey.
Why It’s Cool:
What an excellent punch-in-the-face of a cosmic superhero comic this book is. It’s got incredible art by the McDaid and Baron team, with a script that does not treat Zod or anyone around him as too precious to mess up. I’m loving it, and this issue has a great twist.
Price:
$3.99

Love Everlasting #14
Writer: Tom King
Artist: Elsa Charretier
Colorist: Matt Hollingsworth
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: Image Comics
The Eisner and Harvey-nominated series nears its halfway point as more secrets are revealed. The Cowboy continues to serve the system and deliver death, but every time he encounters Joan, his soul rips apart. How long can he go on without destroying everything he loves…including Joan Peterson?
Why It’s Cool:
I’m not going to pretend I know what’s going on in this comic. I don’t even have a halfway plausible theory. No, I’m just letting it all wash over me and feeling the big feels around romance this one is serving up with such great (and bold) comics craft.
Price:
$3.99

The One Hand #3
Writer: Ram V
Artist: Laurence Campbell
Colorist: Lee Loughridge
Letterer: Aditya Bidikar
Design: Tom Muller
Publisher: Image Comics
As the mysteries of the new One Hand Killer deepen, Detective Ari Nassar is starting to see connections everywhere. The walls are closing in as his prior arrests are questioned…and yet, why does he think the only person who call help is Odell Watts, the man Ari put away years ago for the very same crimes?
Why It’s Cool:
This book features a top-tier creative team all operating at the top of their game, pulling in the same direction with inspired and deliberate purpose. Plus, it’s working in excellent tandem with its sister series, The Six Fingers. You should be reading both books.
Price:
$3.99

The Sacrificers #7
Writer: Rick Remender
Artist: Max Fiumara
Colorist: Dave McCaig
Letterer: Rus Wooton
Publisher: Image Comics – Giant Generator
Alone and dangerously close to death, Soluna is on the run, chased through a brutal, unknown landscape as the absence of power has triggered massive world destruction that not even a god can contend with.
Why It’s Cool:
A new story arc starts this week for one of the most gorgeous monthly comics we’ve got. If you didn’t read the first arc, The Sacrificers is a fantastic fantasy comic, one that pushes the elites sacrifice poor children narrative even further past just skewering the right. And this new arc picks up right where it left off.
Price: $3.99

Traveling to Mars #11
Writer:Mark Russell
Artist:Roberto “Dakar” Meli
Colorist: Chiara Di Francia
Letterer: Mattia Gentili
Publisher:Ablaze
As Roy’s journey to Mars comes to an end, he is forced to reflect on his life and the future of those who still have one.
Why It’s Cool:
Writer Mark Russell has penned a lot of really thoughtful comics, often about the human condition. But perhaps no book of his better expresses what it feels like to be fleeting and mortal, trying to find meaning in life and a way to make it all feel alright. As I noted at the start of this column, I may one day write a longer review on why I like Traveling To Mars so much, but I’ll just say now that this has been one of the most poignant comics I’ve ever read. And this finale is a fitting sendoff.
Price: $3.99
