Sony Pictures has finally announced The Legend of Zelda movie release date for the highly-anticipated live-action adaptation of Nintendo’s best-selling video game series. The project has been in-development since November 2023.
When is The Legend of Zelda movie release date?
The Legend of Zelda movie has now been scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 26, 2027, pitting it directly against Legendary’s next Godzilla x Kong movie. The adaptation will be directed by The Maze Runner filmmaker Wes Ball, who is also producing alongside Joe Hartwick Jr. for Oddball Entertainment. The project will be co-financed by Sony Pictures and Nintendo, with game co-creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad also serving as producers. At the moment, the film has no official cast and synopsis yet.
“This is Miyamoto. I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films,” Miyamoto said in a previous statement he released when the project was officially revealed. “I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”
The original fantasy video game series was co-created by Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka in 1986. The story centered around the adventures of a young elf-like man named Link, and Princess Zelda, as they fight together to save the kingdom of Hyrule from the control of evil warlord Ganon. Due to its successful release, the game expanded to 20 more installments and spin-offs, including the latest 2024 release The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.
