Among the biggest stars of his generation, Russell Crowe seems to be content doing things his own way now. He hasn’t headlined a tentpole in quite some time, but he’s sneakily been having a ball with B-movies such as Unhinged and The Pope’s Exorcist. His fans must’ve been somewhat disappointed by his absence in Ridley Scott‘s long-awaited Gladiator II, a sequel to the classic original, which won Crowe a Best Actor Academy Award. But they seem to be satisfying their Crowe cravings by tuning into his final collaboration with Scott, the 2010 film Robin Hood, which is climbing up the streaming charts on Max.
According to FlixPatrol, the movie has been doing consistently well on Max this month, accumulating a total of 373 points. It found spots on the top 10 charts twice in a row. Positioned as a gritty reboot of the oft-adapted legend — it was released in the wake of The Dark Knight — the movie was produced on a hefty reported budget of $200 million. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, but opened commercially to mediocre reviews. Robin Hood currently holds a “rotten” 43% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. It also underperformed at the box office, grossing around $320 million worldwide. Going by the rule of thumb, it should’ve made at least $400 million to break even.
Unfortunately, Robin Hood marked Crowe’s final time headlining a project of that scale. He played a supporting role in Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel, and the titular role in Darren Aronofsky‘s Noah, but neither of those projects can be compared to Robin Hood, which was touted as a return to Gladiator territory for Scott and Crowe. They also worked together on the acclaimed period drama American Gangster, the romantic drama A Good Year, and the political thriller Body of Lies, which also featured Leonardo DiCaprio.
Crowe’s Playing a Nazi in His Next Movie
Crowe’s last mega-budget film was Thor: Love and Thunder, fronted by Chris Hemsworth. He appeared in an extended cameo as Zeus in the movie, which was produced on a reported budget of $250 million and grossed under $800 million worldwide. His last release was another superhero film, the disastrous Kraven the Hunter, which will always be remembered as the final film in Sony’s doomed Spider-Man spin-off universe. Crowe will next star as the Nazi Hermann Göring in Nuremberg, a period drama featuring Rami Malek in the lead role. You can watch Robin Hood on Max, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
