STARFIGHTER – Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling Finally Reveal What They’ve Been Secretly Cooking Up — GeekTyrant

Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars film is officially moving forward and details were revealed at Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo!

Levy (Free Guy, Stranger Things) and Gosling took the stage to confirm the title of the film is Star Wars: Starfighter, and it’s heading to theaters on May 28, 2027.

The film is set five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker and, according to Levy, it’s charting a new course.

“There are many rumors, some true, some not. … This is not a prequel, this is not a sequel. It’s a new adventure.”

Gosling clearly pumped about it, saying: “Such a great story with great and original characters. So much heart and adventure. There is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.”

The film is being co-written by Levy and Jonathan Tropper (The Adam Project), and has reportedly been in development for the last two years in total secrecy.

While Lucasfilm continues to expand its post-Skywalker saga with projects from James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Simon Kinberg, Starfighter is apparently on the fast track, and separate from all of that.

Levy’s entry is a standalone film, not tied to the main Star Wars saga, and that creative freedom seems to be exactly what’s fueling the excitement behind it.

Anora Oscar-winner Mikey Madison was reportedly offered a supporting role in the film, but turned it down. I imagine Star Wars just isn’t her thing.

Production on Star Wars: Starfighter is set to begin this fall. Buckle up.
