And she certainly put Barry’s acting prowess to good use, with the star taking on the role of Sabrina’s bad boy love interest, who she first meets in prison before reluctantly accompanying him on a slew of crimes.
Interestingly, the video ends with Sabrina appearing to get fed up with Barry’s antics and handcuffing him to a chair with tape over his mouth.
And while their relationship was already very much public knowledge by the time “Please Please Please” came around, people were still obsessed with the way that Sabrina platformed their largely-private romance with a song that includes the sassy lyrics: “I beg you don’t embarrass me, motherfucker,” and “If you wanna go and be stupid, don’t do it in front of me / If you don’t wanna cry to my music, don’t make me hate you prolifically.”
Lyrics that didn’t age particularly well, considering Barry and Sabrina ended their relationship in December — six months after the video came out.
While neither star has publicly shared a reason for their split, it was widely speculated at the time that Barry had cheated on Sabrina. However, a source told People that this was not the case, saying: “He was always very faithful to her from the start. There was no third party involved in their break or at any other point in their relationship. Reports indicating otherwise are entirely fabricated.”
But whatever the truth may be, Sabrina arguably got pretty iconic revenge on her ex in the music video for her latest version of “Please Please Please” featuring country legend Dolly Parton, which was released as part of the deluxe edition of her Short n’ Sweet album earlier today.
In this video — which is shot entirely in black and white — Sabrina appears to revive her character from the original version, and is driving a pickup truck with Dolly riding shotgun.
The two are joyfully singing together, but things seem suspicious, with the two women seen loading shovels into the truck.
Things take even more of a turn towards the end of the song, when viewers discover that the police are chasing Dolly and Sabrina. It is then revealed that this video seemingly picked up where the original left of, with a man with his hands tied and a bag over his head shown in the back of the pickup.
While it isn’t explicitly stated that this man is Barry’s character from the original video, the implication is obvious as he is wearing the exact same outfit as Barry was when Sabrina handcuffed him to the chair.
Needless to say, Sabrina’s fans have had their minds blown by this storyline development, and took to X to share their reaction. One popular tweet simply reads: “they fucking killed the guy from the previous please please please music video.”
The music video comes after Sabrina seemingly scrapped her reported decision to release her album track “Bed Chem” as a single in the wake of her and Barry’s split. Before the break-up made headlines, it was speculated that she had filmed a music video for the NSFW song, which is believed to be about Barry.
