One Of Doctor Who Season 15’s Episodes Will Include An Unexpected Sequel

As Russell T Davies shares a preview of what adventures await Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor and Varada Sethu’s Belinda Chandra in Doctor Who season 15, the showrunner confirmed the upcoming episodes will feature a return to an undisclosed previous adventure. Gatwa’s second season of the beloved sci-fi series sees the titular Time Lord embark on a journey to return Belinda to her own timeline. Doctor Who season 15 will also revisit Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday, as the season 14 companion embarked on her own journey on Earth in the finale.

As Davies sat down with Doctor Who Unleashed to discuss the secrets behind Doctor Who season 15’s premiere, “The Robot Revolution”, the showrunner teased what the rest of the new season has to offer. While Davies drew attention to both episode 2, “Lux”, and the highly-promoted Interstellar Song Contest episode, the writer also confirmed that the season would take audiences on an adventure that will serve as a sequel to an unnamed past story. Check out Davies’ full preview below:

There’s gorgeous stuff to come. There’s… I think it’s like next week, we’re in Miami in 1952. We’ve got great things coming up. We’ve got a very unexpected sequel coming up. We’ve got The Interstellar Song Contest. I mean, we’ll be publicizing that one right away. That one is going to kill us, making that. Also, keep your eye on Anita Dobson. Because she’s been ticking away for a year now. She ended season 1 with that flourish in the snow on the rooftop, promising terror to come. That’s on its way. Promise.

What Davies’ Sequel Confirmation Means For Doctor Who Season 15

Certain Hints Point Towards A Return To One Of The Doctor’s Darkest Stories

A large part of Gatwa’s era has been focused on providing an entry point for newcomers. In order to do this, the era for the most part has focused on new villains and settings with few ties to past adventures, though legacy elements and characters were incorporated into larger stories, such as the two-part Doctor Who season 14 finale “The Legend of Ruby Sunday/Empire of Death”. Yet, even in these cases, the returning elements were introduced in ways that weren’t reliant on fan service, giving those unfamiliar an easy time to understand their role and significance.

Ncuti Gatwa will be returning to his role as the 15th Doctor this weekend, with new episodes airing over the course of the next eight weeks.

As such, Davies confirming an outright sequel to a past adventure is surprising, as it sets up certain expectations beyond mere returning characters. Current speculation points to episode 3, “The Well”, being a continuation of the season 4 adventure “Midnight”, with the promise of an audio-based monster on an unexplored world and a subtle clock Easter egg in the title reveal leading to many fans suspecting that Gatwa may revisit one of the series’ scariest adventures. However, with the era still focused on welcoming newcomers, it may not be until the episode airs that the sequel ties are revealed.
