Nick Cave candidly speaks about the death of his two sons, sharing he feels a sense of “culpability” in their passing

Nick Cave has opened up about the tragic passing of two of his sons, sharing that he feels a sense of “culpability” in their deaths.

In an interview with The Guardian, the Aussie musician shared that his new exhibition of ceramic sculptures tells “a story about a man’s culpability in the loss of his child, and addressing that in a way I wasn’t really able to do with music”.

The revelation prompted the interviewer to ask Cave if he personally feels a sense of culpability in the deaths of two of his sons, Arthur and Jethro.

“I think it’s something that people who lose children feel regardless of the situation,” he shared. “Simply because the one thing you’re supposed to do is not let your children die.”

In 2015, Cave lost his 15-year-old son Arthur after he fell from a cliff near the family’s home in Brighton, England while on LSD.

The second tragedy struck just seven years later, when Cave’s son Jethro passed away at 31, just two days after having been released from prison in Melbourne.

The former runway model had been in prison for a month after assaulting his mother.

One of the pieces in Cave’s exhibition of ceramic sculptures is called The Devil Forgiven.

The former rock star described the piece as a ”hollowed-out old man with a little child, possibly a dead old man, dead in a pool of tears – a biblical flood of tears, shall we say – and the little child is reaching down in forgiveness.”

He shared that his sense of culpability in Arthur’s death lies somewhat in the fact that his passing was drug related.

“Look, these things are in our DNA, they’re inherited,” he said. “I don’t want to make any assumptions about Arthur, who was just a young boy.

“It’s not like he was into drugs … On a fundamental level, it’s against nature to be burying your children. And there can’t help but be feelings of culpability.”

Cave has two other sons.

His eldest, Luke, was born just 10 days after his late half-brother Jethro to Cave’s wife at the time, Viviane Carneiro.

He now lives in the UK and is the leading man of alternative band Cavey.

He is also father to Arthur’s twin brother Earl, who is now 23 and has a successful acting career appearing in projects such as The End of the F***ing World, Days of the Bagnold Summer and True History of the Kelly Gang.
