Missing snowmachiner John Booth found alive in Northwest Arctic Borough | Local News

An update in the search for a missing snowmachiner in the Northwest Arctic Borough.

On Tuesday, at around 1:45 p.m., Alaska State Troopers received news from ground searchers who reported that 40-year-old John Booth had been located at Cape Krusenstern. Booth was found alive but was suffering from cold weather exposure and signs of hypothermia.

Alaska Wildlife Troopers responded, landing a plane on skis to transport Booth to Kotzebue. Once there, he was taken to the local health center for treatment.

The search for Booth began on February 15, when Alaska State Troopers were notified that he had not returned from a trip traveling from Noatak to Kotzebue. He left Noatak on February 14 at around 3 p.m., but when he didn’t arrive as expected, search teams mobilized.

Ground searchers from Noatak and Kotzebue conducted extensive searches across multiple trails, while AST, AWT, and the Department of Fish and Game flew numerous sorties in state planes in hopes of locating him.

While we are relieved that Booth has been found and is receiving medical care, authorities continue to remind the public about the importance of safety during winter travel.
