Michelle Trachtenberg was reportedly suffering from a lot of different health issues before her sudden death late last month.
On Tuesday, a friend of the Gossip Girl actress’ told Us Weekly that she faced lots of health issues before she was found dead in her NYC apartment, pointing out:
“She had back issues, and then bone problems and she also fell a few times.”

Stressing how persistent the health struggles were, the friend added:
“Whenever we spoke, there was something medically wrong.”
Oof. How difficult.
While it’s unclear why she was dealing with all these challenges, Michelle once walked the red carpet in 2020 with a cane and shared a picture of her bruised ankle on Instagram in 2022.

Another insider close to the situation chimed in:
“Michelle was thrown a lot of curveballs with her health, but she did her best not to let it get her down.”
As Perezcious readers know, according to ABC News police sources, the 39-year-old underwent a liver transplant sometime before her death and she may have been experiencing fatal complications. Other insiders claimed a 911 call about a possible cardiac arrest was made after her mother found her in her apartment. That said, her family opted not to have an autopsy completed, which means we’ll never know the official cause of death.
Liver failure is typically the cause of genetic disorders, cancer, hepatitis, or excessive alcohol consumption, per the Mayo Clinic. If due to alcohol consumption, drinking is not recommended after a transplant, and regardless of the cause, patients need to be careful about their consumption.
It’s still unclear why Michelle had the surgery, but her longtime friend noted:
“She did drink, but not excessively in public. She was never the type to party hard. In the end, she was more of a recluse.”
The friend continued:
“She was very open with those close to her about having the transplant, but she never went into detail.”
Hmm.
The Harriet the Spy alum was spotted in public for the last time just six days before her death when she stepped out for dinner with friends at Sartiano’s in the Big Apple, where an eyewitness said “something seemed off about her.” Her neighbor Ariana Rodriguez also noticed how she looked “less and less like herself” and “svelte” before her passing. An industry insider agreed:
“The last time I saw her, something felt off. You could sense something was going on. She was really frail and had been sick for a while.”
So very sad. Fans had speculated about the performer’s health in the months before her death, but she insisted she was “happy and healthy.” We’re so sorry things were such an uphill battle for her. R.I.P.
