Local gyms enjoying January uptick in usage – CentralAlbertaOnline.com

You may have noticed a few extra people at your local gym over the month or so.

That’s a common occurrence around this time of year, as people try to lose extra Christmas weight or follow through with their New Year’s resolutions.

Ron Schafer is the Director of Physical Education at Burman University in Lacombe.

He says the PE Centre usually sees a 20 per cent spike in usage during January.

“Our usage during the month of January, we took this a number of years ago, we had 2,500 usages during the month.”

Burman University’s PE Centre has lots to offer including a fitness centre, gymnasium, pool, and racquetball court. Schafer says the 12,000-square-foot fitness centre is the most popular option, offering a wide variety of cardio and weight machines, in addition to free weights. He notes people have been using the gym quite a bit for pickleball which is one of the fastest growing sports in North America.

Schafer says they usually start to see numbers decrease as the warmer weather arrives.

“We do have people that use it 12 months of the year, even in the summer months, as soon as it gets nice outside, and people start to get back to the golf course and start walking more on the road because it’s not so icy, the usage does drop off for sure.”

In today’s society, many people spend the majority of their time indoors in an office setting which is why it is important to make use of local fitness centres.

“If you don’t do that, you are really going to be hurting because there’s not a whole lot of physical activity in the average person’s daily activity,” said Schafer. “It’s critical that a person has activity and fitness centres are some of the most common ways to do that because our daily activity doesn’t usually give that to us.”
