How to help your pets in hot temperatures

As most of us celebrate some downtime with our families over the December period, the high temperatures experienced across much of the country have many concerned about their pets.

And while we humans cool ourselves with fans, air conditioners and swimming pools, let us not forget the animals in our care who are also suffering.

Cynthia Swanepoel, kennel manager at SPCA Randburg shared tips to keep your pets safe during the heatwave and holidays:

  • This heat is terrible. Make sure you have enough water bowls and buckets around for your animals.
  • Freeze some water in an ice cream bowl and give it to your pet before you go to work.
  • Make sure your animal has enough shelter from the sun.
  •  Do not take them for walks during the day.
  • Do not put wet towels on them, rather put the fan on and let them lie down by the fan.

“During the festive season, make sure you have someone responsible to look after your pet when you go away for the holidays or place them into a boarding facility that is registered. Do not leave them alone with food and water.”
