Fun times begin at the Walton Y For years, residents talked about the possibility, dreaming, planning, yearning to see a YMCA come to Walton County.
Well, the dream has finally come true.
Following a multi-year fundraising and construction project, the Waton County YMCA is finally open. The doors opened April 10 at 10 a.m. and it didn’t take long for new members of the Walton Y to come pouring in to take advantage of the new center’s many amenities. The biggest attraction, of course, was
the pool.
A full-purpose competition sized swimming pool has long been a cherished desire for many in Walton County, which hasn’t boasted a public pool in decades, and the new Y has two pools, one full-size athletic pool, and a second, smaller family swimming pool, and both saw plenty of action upon opening. But the pool was hardly the only thing in use on Thursday. The gym had plenty of people trying out the new equipment, and while the Y had conducted numerous membership drives, many more were there on opening day with questions, requests and more attempts to sign up to join the new Y now that it was finally here.
Thursday’s opening was described as a soft opening, so not everything was fully in place, with more to come in the days ahead of the ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22.
But, for now, the Y is open and Walton County’s dream is here.
