Netflix has dropped the official trailer for Tyler Perry‘s She the People, his first comedy for the streamer.
Terri J. Vaughn stars as Mississippi Lieutenant Governor candidate Antoinette Dunkerson (Vaughn) who wins her election and then realizes her new job will involve a lot more than what she originally signed up for. Per the logline, Dunkerson must figure out how to thrive under a sexist and condescending governor while attempting to keep her family in line now that they’re all in the public eye.
“I hate this politics shit!”, says Dunkerson’s mom in the trailer, to which Dunkerson replies, “Mama, have you been smoking weed?”
Jade Novah, Drew Olivia Tillman, Tré Boyd, Dyon Brooks and Jo Marie Payton also star.
Perry served as writer, director and producer. Producers also include Angi Bones and Tony Strickland under the Tyler Perry Studios banner. Executive producers are Niya Palmer, Keisha Lance Bottoms and Vaughn.
As previously announced, the comedy series will premiere in two parts — the eight-episode part one drops on May 22, with part two, also eight episodes, following on August 14.
She The People was first announced in January as part of Perry’s Netflix slate for 2025 his second series under his deal with the streamer. Also upcoming is Madea’s Destination Wedding, a feature film that follows 2022’s A Madea Homecoming, drama feature Straw and the faith-based feature R&B. Part 2 of drama series Beauty in Black‘s first season, premiered on March 6.
