FBI: Most Wanted – Gut Job – Review: Lord, Have Mercy.

This week, FBI: Most Wanted took us on a unique and unpredictable adventure with “Gut Job,” blending the melodrama of a soap opera with the grit of a police procedural. It was gloriously excessive and unapologetically soapy—making for a thoroughly entertaining watch. Let’s review.

The episode opens with Special Agent Sheryll Barnes (Roxy Sternberg) navigating a date with her Gen Z girlfriend. It’s clear she feels like a fish out of water among the hipster crowd, eventually blurting out, “I swear it’s not you. I just want to be alone.” Ouch.

Later, we see that Barnes’ existential crisis has her reconsidering her entire life. Sitting in her vehicle, she’s reading job bulletins. By the end of the episode, she’s consulting Special Agent in Charge Isobel Castille (Alana De La Garza) about a potential move to Washington, D.C., to be closer to her kids.

The main premise of this episode was outrageous yet oddly captivating. When I saw the home-renovation power couple at the center of this story, I couldn’t help but think of Chip and Joanna Gaines. Tell me I’m wrong! The resemblance (an all-American rugged man paired with a stylish brunette wife) immediately drew me in. The twist? This wife was embroiled in a scandalous affair with a married, Black evangelical preacher, leading to a truly unhinged plot to frame her husband.

Forgive me—I’m getting ahead of myself.

The mystery kicks off with Jake Carmen (Jordan Cox) drunkenly stumbling out of a bar. He wakes up next to a bloody hammer, and his wife’s dead body on the floor. Yikes. From there, the plot spirals into absolute chaos. Special Agents Nina Chase (Shantel VanSanten) discovers the driver of Jake’s taxi from the night before stuffed dead in the trunk.

Jake turns to his best friend, Romy Gilyard (Megan Channell), a nurse who refuses to help—but also refuses to turn him in. Jake swears he’s been set up and begs Romy to test his blood, desperate to prove he was drugged. From this moment, Jake embarks on his own rogue mission for justice, operating with ‘OJ Simpson-esque’ determination to uncover his wife’s real killer.

Jake’s unstoppable energy propels the narrative forward. Case in point: Supervisory Special Agent Remy Scott (Dylan McDermott) eventually tracks him down, resulting in a rare hand-to-hand combat sequence that delivers a thrilling punch—literally and figuratively. Against all odds, Jake overpowers Remy and snatches his gun. Remy, ever the seasoned professional, warns Jake that he will find and capture him no matter what.

This pivotal moment solidifies Jake’s storyline. He’s not just a frantic man on the run—he’s a force to be reckoned with, fighting for his own innocence while trying to persuade the FBI to hunt down the “real” killer.

As expected, the FBI’s case veers into truly absurd territory. First, Romy’s blood test confirms Jake was roofied. Then Jake—using his own unorthodox detective skills—hijacks his wife’s phone and sends a sultry photo from her camera roll, leading him straight to an unsuspecting elderly woman, Ida Monroe (Sandra Fey Williams).

Jake barges into Ida’s home, smashing a framed photo in frustration. This, of course, results in Ida accidentally injuring herself out of fear. Thankfully, Jake’s humanity shines through when he calls an ambulance for her before making his dramatic escape.

This wild encounter gives Remy’s team the clue they need—Jake’s wife was entangled in a web of deceit with Pastor Westin Tillis (L. Steven Taylor) her very married lover. Even more scandalous? Their affair resulted in a pregnancy. Lord, have mercy.

With Pastor Tillis’ world crashing down, his brother-in-law, Olin Tillis (Rob Demery), decides to “fix” things—by framing Jake and orchestrating a murder-suicide. Seems reasonable.

The final showdown is a spectacle. Olin and Jake fight like two men possessed, wielding hammers, nail guns, and whatever else they can get their hands on. Jake, once again proving his resilience, fights his way to victory. But just as he thinks he has the upper hand, Olin aims his gun at him and delivers a chilling line: “It was your family or mine. I chose mine.”

Enter the FBI. Remy and his team storm in just in time. In perfect action-movie timing, Special Agent Ray Cannon (Edwin Hodge) executes an epic takedown, bringing the chaos to a dramatic close.

“Gut Job” teetered on the brink of absurdity—but the episode fully leaned into its over-the-top nature. The combination of testosterone-fueled fight sequences, shocking revelations, and soap opera dramatics made for an unexpectedly delicious watch. This wasn’t just an episode; it was an experience. Equal parts gripping, chaotic, and unintentionally humorous, “Gut Job” was one wild ride.
