Before Family Ties came along, Baxter was best known for her twice-Emmy-nominated role of Nancy Lawrence Maitland on the ’70s network drama Family.
After Family Ties, Baxter worked consistently since the sitcom wrapped in 1989. She went on to star in many TV movies, and like her onscreen husband Michael Gross, the actress also guest-starred on Michael J. Fox’s hit TV series, Spin City.
In 2011, Baxter released her memoir Untied, in which she detailed her cancer battle and publicly coming out in 2009.
“I am a lesbian, and it was a later-in-life recognition of that fact,” she told NBC’s Today at the time.
In 2013, the actress wed her girlfriend of seven years, general contractor Nancy Locke.
In recent years, Baxter made appearances on The Young and the Restless and Glee, where she and actress Patty Duke were cast as a lesbian couple.
