2018’s A Simple Favor impressed both critics and audiences with its fusion of crime thriller and black comedy, and now Another Simple Favor is on the way. Directed by Paul Feig, A Simple Favor stars Anna Kendrick as the aptly named Stephanie Smothers, a widowed mommy vlogger who is socially awkward. Stephanie’s life changes forever after she meets high-class professional Emily Nelson (Blake Lively), and she sees a world that she never thought was possible. The two become quite close, but after Emily goes missing, Stephanie takes it upon herself to find her.

Despite appearing one way on the surface, A Simple Favor kept viewers on their toes with a series of mind-bending twists and turns that were as funny as they were shocking. The ending of A Simple Favor was merely the icing on the cake as its many surprises finally came to a head. While a sequel never seemed necessary after the satisfying ending of the first film, director Paul Feig and the original cast have returned for Another Simple Favor. The movie quietly progressed behind-the-scenes and is set to arrive in 2025.

A Full Trailer For Another Simple Favor Arrives

Shortly after the first teaser was revealed, the latest news arrived in the form of a full trailer for Another Simple Favor. Like the teaser before it, the full trailer opens with Stephanie giving a book lecture that is interrupted by the arrival of Emily, who invites her to be her maid of honor. Stephanie is very suspicious of Emily’s motives but ultimately decides to attend against the best wishes of Sean. The trailer then shows several tense scenes between the two as Emily frequently quips about murder.

Things are expected to take a dark turn as one scene features a maid screaming in horror at the sight of something, and another character stands with a machine gun at Emily’s wedding reception. Another important reveal in the trailer is the arrival of several new characters, including Allison Janney’s aunt Linda McLanden, and Elizabeth Perkins as Margaret McLanden, Emily’s mother. How they’ll factor into the plot isn’t shown in the trailer, but they wouldn’t be there if they didn’t have their own motives.

The Movie Will Debut At SXSW First Before Arriving On Prime Video

As was previously announced, Another Simple Favor went into production in spring 2024, and the filming process was rather short. In late-May 2024, director Paul Feig announced that filming for the sequel was nearly completed, meaning it only took a few months.

In January 2025, rumors that the film had been scrapped began appearing online, but Paul Feig was quick to shut those down. The director announced that the film was completed, and only a few weeks later it was announced that it would open the 2025 SXSW Film Festival on March 7, 2025. Two months later, the movie will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video starting on May 1, 2025. There are no plans for a theatrical release despite the fact that the original was a box-office hit.

A Simple Favor earned nearly $100 million against a reported budget of $20 million (via Box Office Mojo).

The Original Cast Is Returning Plus Some New Faces

When the project was first announced in 2022, it was already confirmed that Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively would return to reprise their roles of Stephanie and Emily, respectively. However, in early 2024, it was also confirmed that even more original stars would be returning, with Henry Golding back as Sean Townsend and Andrew Rannells as Darren. Furthermore, Bashir Salahuddin will return as Detective Summerville alongside Joshua Satine as Miles Smothers, Ian Ho as Nicky Townsend-Nelson, and Kelly McCormack as Stacy.

Oscar-winner Allison Janney was the first new name added to the ensemble of Another Simple Favor, and the I,Tonya and The West Wing star is set to play aunt Linda McLanden. Elizabeth Perkins has stepped into the role of Margaret McLanden (Emily’s mom), and the part was originally played by Jean Smart in the first film. Michele Morrone plays Emily’s future husband, Dante Versano, while Elena Sofia Ricci plays Dante’s mom, Portia. Alex Newell joins as Emily’s assistant and confidant, Vicky, while Taylor Ortega plays Agent Irene Walker.

Catching up with the original characters from the first film, the sequel will take place at Emily’s lavish wedding in Italy. Stephanie has been asked by Emily to be her maid of honor, and the successful true crime author can’t help but suspect that Emily is out for revenge after the events of the first movie. On top of that, things take a dark turn when a murder turns the day of joy into a shocking search for answers.

Though the film debuted at SXSW in March 2025, plot details are being kept under wraps for now, to prevent spoilers. Clearly, Emily is up to something even if it isn’t necessarily as nefarious as Stephanie suspects. The real question looming over the entire film is why Emily asked Stephanie to be her maid of honor, and it likely has something to do with the movie’s title, Another Simple Favor.
