Everyone HATES The New Starbucks Cups!

We appreciate Starbucks trying to be more environmentally friendly, but… this was NOT the way to do it!

The huge coffee corporation seems to be beta testing a new style of cup for their cold drinks, having replaced their iconic plastic ones in certain cities. For reference, here’s Britney Spears enjoying a blended treat a few years back.

Looks delicious, right? You can just imagine the whipped cream and mocha-tastic granules of ice… Well, with these new compostable cups, you have to use a lot more imagination…

Yes, that’s the cup for a COLD drink. A Frappucino, a blended, whatever. All that delectable imagery is covered up.

The new cup is compostable, and apparently you can’t make it like that AND clear at the same time. Per their website, the new cups are made from “fiber-based paper board with a bioplastic liner,” with lids crafted from molded fiber — all opaque materials. You know what else is opaque? This business decision. It’s like they forgot part of the appeal is how the drink looks. It’s a whole Starbucks experience.

So far this cup has been rolled out in select locations in 14 states, with customers starting to see the new cups as early as February 11. These are the states affected:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Georgia
  • Hawaii
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • New Mexico
  • South Carolina
  • Virginia
  • Washington

Even within states, it’s only certain neighborhoods to start. Not even all of Los Angeles has the new cups yet, just a few locations, such as ones in Santa Monica and West Hollywood. Most Starbucks will keep their plastic cups for now — but the company aims to replace ALL of their cups by 203o. A spokesperson told Fox 5 in New York:

“As an alternative, customers are welcome to bring in their clean, personal reusable cup or order their beverage ‘for here’ to have their beverage served in a ceramic mug or glass.”

Oof. That’s a real “blame the victim” mentality, isn’t it? Look, we’re making light of this. And we absolutely want corporations to work on their carbon footprint… but why does it always seem like it’s at the expense of the customer’s experience and never a minor reduction in their record profits or CEO take-home? No, it’s always a s**ttier user experience. We aren’t the only ones who think so! Customers have been getting disappointed the whole past week, and they’re venting on X (Twitter):

“@Starbucks The iced tea drinks should still come in a clear plastic cups. I want to see the color, feel the cold, see the ice. The paper cup is such a turn off for iced drinks.”

“I do not like them new paper cups from Starbucks it’s bad enough the straws be getting soggy hella fast”

“@starbucks your new cups are horrible- you can’t see your drink, which is part of the fun. And the kids are terrible. Change back! Thank you for bringing back straws and sugar but now terrible new cups”

“New Starbucks cup. Not good. I guess if they’re only getting $7.85 for a cup of coffee they need to reduce costs.”

“What’s up with this stupid @Starbucks compostable cup lid? It’s like someone said, ‘How can we make the lid even more unappealing?’”

“Iced drinks in paper cups? Oh but still plastic straws. This is what we’re doing now? I’m sure @Starbucks @StarbucksNews will survive just fine without my $6.25. But I’m out. Been meaning to cut them off anyway – this is the last ‘straw’”

Oh, there’s also a new compostable lid for hot drinks that doesn’t work quite right. Instead of the lip of the previous lids, it’s just a little hole in a paper top. Good luck not spilling that. Here are some more unsatisfied customers…

Sigh…
