After Seeing Dr. Mohan and Dr. Abbot, This Is the One Time I Wished ‘The Pitt’ Was More Like ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

Editor’s note: The below contains spoilers for The Pitt Episode 14.No matter how many complex medical mysteries or thorny social issues have walked through The Pitt‘s doors, the series has never lost sight of its characters’ humanity. The ensemble’s vulnerable journeys have sustained viewers through every high-octane hour of this shift from hell — and if there’s one fundamental thing we know about humans, it’s that when sparks fly, flirting’s gonna flirt. The heartwrenching softness of Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle) and Dr. Heather Collins’ (Tracy Ifeachor) past romantic entanglement aside, other characters have remained professionals yet still demonstrated a touch of flirtatious energy.

Take how Dennis Whitaker’s (Gerran Howell) growing confidence catches the eye of a passing nurse, or Victoria Javadi’s (Shabana Azeez) endearing crush on Mateo Diaz (Jalen Thomas Brooks). After Episode 14, we can add none other than Dr. Samira Mohan (Supriya Ganesh) and Dr. Jack Abbot (Shawn Hatosy) to that list. The two are an unlikely pairing — especially because a series this committed to hospital realism will never progress their fleeting chemistry into an actual relationship. But after watching Mohan and Abbot make medical history together, in their case, I wouldn’t mind a little infusion of Grey’s Anatomy pizazz.

Abbot and Mohan Have Chemistry in ‘The Pitt’ Episode 14

As the hospital staff slowly pick up the pieces after the Pittfest tragedy, Abbot and Mohan urgently try to revive an unconscious patient who sustained a bullet wound to his leg. Following a hunch, Abbot guides Mohan through a procedure so rare that only one confirmed case exists: using a pigtail catheter to aspirate air from their patient’s heart. The two make an excellent impromptu team, with Abbot concisely instructing Mohan through the intimidating specifics and calming her nerves over surgeon Dr. Emery Walsh’s (Tedra Millan) vocal objections.

In the successful aftermath, Abbot commends Mohan with a smirk that’s already halfway to a grin. Mohan, accustomed to Robby’s critiques, pauses to let Abbot’s compliment settle. Given her bright, pleased response, she’d needed that reassurance as much as she needed the proof of her own competence. A certain sparkle lights up her satisfaction, and the same goes for Abbot’s dry-as-a-desert teasing — the man who donates blood while tending to critically wounded patients could’ve performed that cutting-edge operation without missing a beat.

What’s the Meaning of the Prayer Dr. Robby Recites in ‘The Pitt’s Latest Episode?

The prayer has a deeper meaning than you might expect when it comes to understanding Dr. Robby.

As a third-year resident still finding her groove, Mohan hasn’t quite reached Abbot’s level. That said, she leaves her infamous “Slo-mo” nickname in the dust during the mass casualty incident. She more than rises to the occasion by following instructions to the letter, staying focused throughout the overwhelming chaos, and when it matters most, trusting her instincts. No one will forget her improvising with an EZ-IO and successfully preventing a patient’s deadly intercranial bleed. Mohan might just be more of a rebel than anyone realizes. With Abbot as a semi-mentor, she’s in good company.

‘The Pitt’ Won’t Have an Abbot and Mohan Romance, but They’re Still a Great Match

Give Mohan time to think again, however, and her old hesitations creep back in. Enter Abbot, who sagely spies a teaching opportunity and gives a promising student a platform to learn, as well as enough room to take pride in her accomplishments. Even in The Pitt‘s world, are we really surprised that a live wire sizzles between two competent, sexy people appreciating one another’s competence? Shawn Hatosy confirmed the scene’s flirtatious vibes to Decider, while promising Abbot’s intentions aren’t predatory:

“I think Abbot has tremendous respect for Dr. Mohan. I think he sees her as one of the smartest people in there. […] I don’t mean it in like a creepy way, but it’s just a sort of a flirtation because of this respect that he has for her.”

Even if we didn’t already know and appreciate The Pitt’s approach to workplace romance, Mohan and Abbot still amount to two ships passing in the night (shift). This delightful tension, initiated by an emergency, won’t be investigated outside the hospital doors. If The Pitt‘s second season ever decides to bend the rules, however, these two deserve to be the exception. Mohan and Abbot’s energies absolutely shift from professionally clicking in the heat of the moment (pun intended) to sizzling in the quiet contentment of a job well done. Speaking for myself, I would watch that appreciative, healthy, startlingly romantic, and sexy mentor-mentee dance unfold all day long.
