Gia Giudice revealed her family’s reaction to the news of the $3 million in tax liens filed against her mother, Teresa Giudice, and stepfather, Luis Ruelas, during an interview on Tuesday.
As she also spoke of her new ventures, including her new podcast, Casual Chaos, and her new show, Next Gen NYC, the 24-year-old Real Housewives of New Jersey star insisted that her family was responsible, stating that everything would be taken care of in terms of Teresa, 52, and Luis’ finances. She also confirmed there has been an open line of communication with her sisters, Gabriella Giudice, 21, Milania Giudice, 19, and Audriana Giudice, 15.
“It was definitely a family discussion,” Gia revealed to PEOPLE on April 15. “My sisters were calling, just making sure — because they’re at college, everyone definitely checks in — ‘Is everything under control?’ And [Teresa and Ruelas] obviously said, ‘Yes, everything is being handled.’ So certain things we obviously do talk about as a family, but if it’s careless stories, then we just brush it off.”
In addition to Luis being hit with two tax liens in recent months, one for nearly $2.6 million and another for $163,523.94, Teresa received a lien of her own in the amount of $303,889.20 — just years after spending time in prison due to the financial crimes of first husband Joe Giudice, 52.
“It’s definitely hard when you’re a part of a public family,” Gia admitted of the drama. “My whole family’s in the public eye. So whatever goes on with my family, [I’m] associated with it. It’s just how it goes. So even though it might not be me, I will still get the wrath of it in the comments, my sisters will. So it kind of affects the whole family, which is unfortunate, but you just have to build tough skin.”
As Teresa and Luis remain in the headlines, Gia is looking forward to stepping out of the family shadow and into a spotlight of her own on her podcast.
“I’m excited for people to get to know my fun lighthearted self,” she shared. “I just want them to feel like they’re in a conversation with me while listening to my podcast. I want them to feel how casual and easy I am, and I also want them to really feel like they can relate to me.”
“I’m super excited to talk about topics like divorce and talk about how I manage my parents’ divorce and maybe see if that can help others, or how I dealt with my parents’ incarceration if any of my viewers are dealing with their parents, family members or friends going through incarceration,” she continued. “I would love to talk about that topic and see how I can help people in that way and really share my advice and try to make an impact in those ways. So I’m super excited to really dive deep.”
Also speaking to PEOPLE, Gia, who was recently targeted by Bethenny Frankel, 54, who has been openly critical of her mom, admitted that the current circumstances her family is facing have been “a lot,” but she defended them as “responsible.”
“Overall, my entire family is very responsible,” she stated. “Everything is getting taken care of … [and] at the end of the day, I will always defend my family whether people like it or not, and you’re either going to love me or hate me for it. As much as I am stepping out on my own, I will always have my family’s back. And that’s all I was doing, and that’s all I’ll keep doing.”
Next Gen NYC season one premieres Tuesday, June 3, at 9/8c on Bravo.
