Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Has A Far More Disturbing Version Of Pegasus, And Fans Are Not Ready For Him

Pegasus is by far one of the most iconic villains the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise has to offer. His eccentric yet elegant personality, lavish lifestyle, and beloved Toon Deck have helped him pass the test of time, with fans still claiming their admiration for the man even decades after his introduction. Moreover, his Millennium Eye’s power to read minds continues to be a memorable part of this cherished franchise.

Even though Maximillion will always be one of the best villains and duelist of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! series, there is another character in the sequel, GX, who has a far superior version of his powers. Trueman, one of Nightshroud’s most loyal minions, was proven to have the power to not only read people’s minds and memories but also alter them to make them slowly lose their will to live.

Trueman’s Powers Are Beyond Terrifying

His Due Against Axel Is the Stuff of Nightmares

In episode #169 of the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime, Axel Broody is challenged by Trueman to a duel over the fate of Domino City’s inhabitants. By that point in the series, the Volcanid Deck user and the protagonist, Jaden, had been looking for clues to find out who was kidnapping people all over the world. They knew that the only reason to find their answers was to defeat the lackey of the mastermind, who was none other than the monster known as Trueman.

This creature was ordered by his master, one of the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise’s most powerful villains, Nightshroud, to defeat as many duelists as possible, as their despair would help him grow in power. Despite knowing the dangers, Axel challenged Trueman, hoping to at least leave a recording of their duel behind to help Jaden defeat him in the future. Their duel was unlike any other in the series, as it was more akin to torture than an actual game. Before the game even began, Trueman used his powers to invade Axel’s mind and learn about his mother’s death.

When the duel began, he altered the boy’s memories to make him believe he was dueling against his father, which immediately made Axel doubt his decisions. Trueman spent the entire duel manipulating his opponent, making him relive the night he had to sacrifice his mother to save his father, and making him believe that his dad hated him for his decision. By the time the duel ended, Axel was sure that he should have died on that day, as he would no longer have to suffer the consequences of his actions.

Pegasus’s Millennium Eye Is Nothing Compared to Trueman’s Powers

Nightshroud’s Lackey Is the King of Mental Manipulation

One of the main reasons why Pegasus has remained one of anime’s most iconic villains is his ability to read his opponent’s mind. Through the Duelist Kingdom arc of the original series, considered by many as one of Yu-Gi-Oh!’s best, Maximillion proved himself to be a cunning and ruthless duelist, capable of resorting to cheating if it assured his victory. As such, he would often rely on the power of his Millennium Eye to see what plays his adversaries would make and plan accordingly.

Nonetheless, his abilities pale in comparison to the ones exhibited by Trueman in GX. The powers demonstrated by the monster seemed to go far beyond simply looking at an opponent’s immediate thoughts. Trueman was able to not only see what his adversary was thinking about at that moment but also search in their brain for any information that could prove relevant to his goals. The fact that he could also manipulate his adversaries to see hallucinations and rewrite their memories makes him one of the most horrifying villains in the series.

Trueman Is an Example of How Brutal Gx Could Be

​​​​​​​The Series Is Not as Childish as Many Fans Believe

For many years, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX has been seen as a less memorable and more childish entry compared to Duel Monsters, its predecessor. While it is true that the original Yu-Gi-Oh! had a fair share of dark and traumatizing scenes, many fans fail to see how scary the sequel could be. Trueman’s introduction is just one of the examples of the drastic increase in terrifying moments and plot devices used in GX. From Yubel almost killing anyone who caused Jaden harm to Nightshroud’s plan to eliminate all life in the universe, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX is more mature than fans believe.
