Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X was season 33 of the long-running hit show. This iteration of the series divided contestants by age for an adventure with fun characters and interesting twists. The season started by separating the new castaways by generation: Gen X, contestants born between 1963 and 1982, and Millennials, contestants born between 1984 and 1997.
The theme of Millennials versus Gen X was uncommon for the series, which usually names its seasons based on the location they’re filming in. Based on the gimmicky theme, expectations for the season were low, but the outcome was surprising. It was a season of firsts, including Adam Klein, who won a million dollars and the title of sole survivor, treating all of his fellow cast members to a weekend in Las Vegas after the finale and reunion.

Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X filmed on the Mamanuca Islands in Fiji from April 4, 2016, to May 12, 2016. It is the third season to divide the castaways into tribes by age, following Survivor: Panama and Survivor: Nicaragua. The cast features 20 players, initially split into two tribes: Takali, which is the Fijian word for “open ocean” (Gen X), and Vanua, which means “homeland” (Millennials).
Why Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X Is So Iconic
Survivor season 33 is commonly considered to be one of the best Survivor seasons in the history of the show. The season received a positive reception and featured plenty of blindsides, including Jay Starrett getting eliminated after being tricked into playing a fake immunity idol. There was also a tribal council vote that came down to drawing rocks. After two votes ended in a tie between Hannah Shapiro and Zeke Smith, the remaining players had to draw rocks, which is how Jessica Lewis was eliminated from the game.
When Did Survivor Season 33 Air?
Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X premiered with a 90-minute episode on September 21, 2016, and ended on December 14, 2016, when Adam was unanimously awarded the million dollars and the title of Sole Survivor over Ken McNickle and Hannah by a 10-0-0 jury vote. The season also included host Jeff Probst being knocked over by an errant wave. More seriously, it featured the show’s first full cast evacuation, when the entire cast was removed on day two due to Tropical Cyclone Zena. They were all back in their camps the next morning, and the game went on as usual without adding extra time to the filming schedule.
