Before starring in When Harry Met Sally, Crystal had already launched his on-screen career as a regular on Saturday Night Live since 1984 and appearing in films such as This is Spinal Tap and The Princess Bride.
Outside of cinema, Crystal worked alongside Hollywood greats, Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams on the initiative Comic Relief. The annual stand-up comedy show started in 1986 as a way to raise money and awareness around homelessness.
Following the huge success of When Harry Met Sally and City Slickers, Crystal was launched to A-lister status, appearing in films such as Analyze This and as the voice of Mike Wazowski in Monster’s Inc.
Crystal has an accolade of awards spanning across his career. Most notably he has taken home six Emmys and a Tony Award. You can even spot his very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!
In 2021, after two decades, Crystal revealed he would be returning to the director’s chair on Here Today after making his directorial debut in 1992 on Mr. Saturday Night, which he adapted and starred in the Broadway musical in 2022.
He told IndieWire that his decision to return to directing stemmed from how “connected” he felt to the script.
“It moved me, and it still moves me,” Crystal revealed.
Crystal has been married to his wife Janice Crystal since 1970. The couple have two daughters and are now proud grandparents!
