Of course, all network television series go on hiatuses at some point or another during their runs, and Chicago Fire is no different. The trailer for the upcoming hour teases a dangerous arson case that Kelly Severide gets involved in, but the teaser raises more questions than answers. Due to the production delays related to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023, NBC gave Chicago Fire season 12 a shorter episode count than the show usually features. In fact, season 12 is set to be the shortest season in Chicago Fire‘s history with only 13 episodes. Before 2024, season 9 was the smallest with 15 episodes (because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Consequently, following the release of episode 7 on March 20, only six episodes remain in season 12.

When Other One Chicago Shows Release New Episodes

Chicago Fire isn’t the only One Chicago show returning following a three-week hiatus — Chicago Med season 9 and Chicago PD season 11 will also air their seventh episodes on March 20, 2024. All three series are tied together, so when one takes a break, they all do, and each show is scheduled only to air 13 episodes in their respective current seasons. Consequently, when Chicago Fire debuts a new episode, the other two will as well on the same night (with Chicago Med airing at 8pm ET; Chicago Fire at 9pm ET; and Chicago PD at 10pm ET).
