Concept Movie:

Blue Miburo is based on the ongoing manga series Blue Wolves of Mibu (Ao no Miburo) by Tsuyoshi Yasuda, best known for soccer manga DAYS (2013-2021). Begun in October 2021, Blue Wolves of Mibu is based on the real life historical figures that formed the Shinsengumi, an elite force of low class samurai and commoners founded to protect representatives of the shogunate in the twilight years of the Edo Period. Their story has inspired novels, movies and manga. Tsuyoshi Yasuda’s manga is serialised in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine and thus far eclipsed thirteen tankobon volumes in Japan. Since February 2024, Kodansha USA has been releasing the series in English, with two volumes currently available.

The anime adaptation is directed by Kumiko Habara (I’m Standing on a Million Lives) with Hiroya Nakata (My Hero Academia) serving as animation producer. The score is composed by Yuki Hayashi with Rapper OZ supplying additional lyrics.

The series synopsis according to the official press release:

“It’s 1863, the twilight of the shogunate, and Japan is on the cusp of monumental change. The streets of the nation’s capital are soaked in blood as political upheaval and rising tensions between masterless, wandering ronin and government samurai set the stage for one of the most turbulent times in Japan’s history. Young orphan Nio is no stranger to the harsh realities of the world, and yet he can’t help but cling to his burning passion for justice and desire to change the world for the better.

“One day, he crosses paths with two men who will become central figures of the coming revolution: Hijikata Toshizo and Okita Souji, two of the founding members of a group of hated ronin known as the Miburo—who would later become known as the Shinsengumi. Inspired by the efforts of the so-called “Blue Miburo,” Nio decides to join the ranks to help carve a path to the world he wishes to see. But with new betrayals and reversals every day, will Nio be able to stay true to his conscience?”

Anime Expo 2024 will take place July 4 to 7 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Presented by yTV, the Anime Expo world premiere will take place 10.30am to 11.20pm, July 4 (Room 403AB), and will additionally offer audience members insight into the series’ production process.
