Top Comics to Buy for December 4, 2024: An old favorite returns
This week’s Top Comics to Buy brings back an old favorite of mine, Snotgirl, which gets its first new issue in about 4 1/2 years. And, as I’ll elaborate on more below, I enjoyed the return quite a bit. I also made my usual four other recommendations for the week, along with the standard release lists … enjoy!
Top Comics to Buy for December 4
Batman #155
Writer: Chip Zdarsky
Artist: Jorge Fornes
Colorist: Tomeu Morey
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: DC Comics
After the shocking events of the last issue, Batman is reeling! But the investigation isn’t over just yet! The Court of Owls is intent on destroying Bruce Wayne’s life, while Commander Star continues to stoke the flames of civil unrest in Gotham City! It all heats up in the unforgettable new chapter of “The Dying City”!
Why It’s Cool: This issue serves up some old-fashioned detective work, an accompanying mystery, Jim Gordon breaking hearts, and just perfect artwork by Jorge Fornes and Tomeu Morey. This current Zdarsky-penned run of Batman is winding down, but this might be its best issue yet.
Price: $4.99
Creepshow #3
Writers: Chris Condon and John Arcudi
Artists: Martin Morazzo and Shawn McManus
Colorist: Chris O’Halloran
Letterer: Pat Brosseau
Publisher: Image Comics – Skybound
The hit anthology continues here, as fan-favorite John Arcudi (B.P.R.D.) and Shawn McManus (Fables) introduce two online sleuths who investigate a murder that has more twists and turns than any message board could ever anticipate. Then, red hot creators Chris Condon (That Texas Blood) and Mart n Morazzo (Ice Cream Man) present the story of the ultimate comic book grail, one that might even be worth dying for…
Why It’s Cool: Martin Morazzo and Shawn McManus are both wonderful artists and visual storytellers, and they get paired here with perfect scripts by Chris Condon and John Arcudi respectively. The first story in particular will resonate with weekly comics buyers, with its themes about comics collections. Don’t miss it.
Price: $3.99
Red Before Black #3
Writer: Stephanie Phillips
Artist: Goran Sudzuka
Colorist: Ive Svorcina
Letterer: Tom Napolitano
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
A particularly pointed wound sends Val spiraling into another hallucinatory PTSD experience, but this one’s different. Her attacker is there.
It will take everything in Val’s mental arsenal to get back to reality and finish the job, but even more pressing-is this the last she’ll see of her attacker?
Why It’s Cool: I might be the head of the Goran Sudzuka fan club, but I just think he’s one of the best regularly-working artists in monthly comics, a storyteller who makes big moments hit and has this vast, impressive versatility. His work is a must-buy for me basically always, and this book is no exception.
Price: $4.99
Snotgirl #16
Writer: Bryan Lee O’Malley
Artist: Leslie Hung
Colorist: Rachel Cohen
Letterer: Mare Odomo, Iasmin Omar Ata
Publisher: Image Comics
Snotgirl is back! Now that allergy-suffering fashion influencer Lottie Person is officially in a couple with Caroline, the girl of her dreams, what kind of trouble will they get into next? Find out in this long-awaited new issue, picking up where Snotgirl #15 left off!
Why It’s Cool: After a long hiatus, Snotgirl returns. And it’s just as entertaining as ever. I’m going to write a bit longer about this issue in tomorrow’s Wednesday Comics column, but I found it fascinating that a book that’s essentially about social media culture must now pivot it’s story to match everything that’s changed in the past four years. It handles it well.
Price: $3.99
Universal Monsters – Frankenstein #4
Writer/Artist: Michael Walsh
Colorist: Toni-Marie Griffin
Letterer: Becca Carey
Publisher: Image Comics – Skybound
Behold! The final confrontation between Frankenstein and his creation! But who is the real monster?
Why It’s Cool: This has been a great mini-series throughout, filling in many interesting perspectives around the classic Frankenstein film many of us know so well. This final issue is no exception, taking us home with a heartrending note.
