Toothless from How To Train Your Dragon is behind this major meme trend

Toothless dancing to a song from Pokémon Black and White wasn’t on my bingo card for 2023 or 2024, but now it’s become one of the biggest new memes of the holiday season. The beloved beast from How To Train Your Dragon has become part of a viral trend thanks to an animation created by Cas van de Pol. Now, a clip of the bug-eyed dragon dancing has become a popular joke format and has taken over platforms like TikTok as people share the animation.

You can view the original clip showing Toothless dancing in an animation called The Ultimate “How To Train Your Dragon” Recap Cartoon by Cas van de Pol on YouTube. Van de Pol has long been known for creating animated summary videos that parody popular series and media franchises. The viral clip comes from a moment in the video where Toothless eats a fish and dances as the Driftveil City theme while the Pokémon Black and White plays. Now, the goofy little guy has taken over social media platforms like TikTok by storm.

Generally speaking, the meme is people taking the clip of Toothless dancing and layer it onto another image with text. The jokes vary, but a lot of them reference a situation when they’re celebrating or just being a little goofy — as the text on this video says, “Grabbing snackies from the fridge at 3am,” and shows Toothless standing new to a photo of an open fridge.

A lot of the jokes also center around end-of-year festivities since the trend took off so close to the holidays. In this video viewed by over 1.8 million people, the text reads, “When you successfully make it to Christmas without telling ur bf what his gift was,” and shows the dragon dancing in front of a pile of wrapped gifts.

There are tons of holiday gags and you can scroll on to see more.

But a lot of the other videos reference goofy little moments of life. This video references the period of time people spend waiting for their doctor while waiting in an exam room.

Here are some other examples ranging from winning a Fortnite match to Godzilla joke.

I personally have not been able to escape this particular meme; it’s all over and I’ve even seen fan animations mimicking this animation now. It’s fantastic and now we also all just get a reason to bop to a catchy song from Pokémon.
