Tones and I has opened up about the effect the music industry has had on her self-esteem.

The Aussie musician, born Toni Watson, took to Instagram to share a lengthy message, reflecting on how ‘beat down’ she felt by body shamers early in her career.

“POV: You used to wear prosthetics to hide your face when world told you you weren’t pretty enough for the industry,” read text written over a video of her performing on stage.

In the caption, Watson went into detail about her experience in the music industry and the unrealistic expectations she found pressed upon her.

“I never really open up or go into detail on how this industry (including the public) beat me down, so far down whilst I continued to grind my way tooth and nail into a position that statistically I deserved but from face value was always under attack,” she wrote.

“I kept my cool amidst the hate, threats, body shaming and continued to keep my head down and find my happiness in human interactions.”

Watson went on to reflect on her music, explaining that in many of her songs she sings about dreaming but never thought it might help her audience to go into more depth on how to achieve their own dreams.

“That’s my fault and truthfully it was purely based on my lack of confidence in the weight my words would carry,” the singer added.

Watson blew up in 2019 when her hit Dance Monkey was released, and for a long time, her name was synonymous with that one song.

“I was a “song” not a person for a long time and to a lot of people I still am,” she continued in her Instagram caption. “I’m ok with that but for the people who care, I have more to give I always have, you just didn’t care to see it.

“So my Name is Tones my album is called beautifully ordinary, it’s out August 2nd! it’s nice to meet you.. again.”
