In Us Weekly’s exclusive look at TLC’s Polyfamily, viewers start to realize why things are bound to get complicated between all four members of the “closed quad” relationship.
Polyfamily, which premieres on Tuesday, April 29, features two married couples, Sean and Taya and Tyler and Alysia, who have decided to also get in relationships with each other’s spouses. Sean is also dating Alysia, while Tyler is dating Taya.
While the couples are happy with their dynamic, their complicated quad relationship does cause some tension between the two men and two women.
“Alysia and I have the most complicated relationship of any relationship I’ve ever had in my life,” Taya explained in Us’ sneak peek at the first episode. “I absolutely love Alysia, she’s like a sister to me in the sense that I love her and I will always go to bat for her, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t have our issues. There are times where I feel like because she is so sensitive with issues and can be extremely emotional … that I really have to slow down and think before I speak in order to keep the peace in our house.”
Alysia seemed to echo Taya’s thoughts, noting that they had to “work really hard on communicating instead of keeping things bottled up.”
“Realizing we need to address things when they come up because it can be a much bigger fight if we just hold on to it,” she explained.
In the clip, the two women are seen getting their nails done together — while also explaining their family dynamic.
“Is this a boy or girl?” the manicurist asked Taya, gesturing to her baby bump. Taya shared that it’s “a boy” and would be their “fifth [child] at home.”
Alysia added that they will have “four boys and one girl.”
“Wow, big family!” the manicurist quipped while both women exclaimed, “Yes, it is.”
Alysia and Taya then begin discussing their sleeping arrangements for the night, since they switch off with both men periodically.
“I’m with Sean tonight, you’re with Tyler,” Alysia explained. “So on Tuesday, who are you with?”
Before Taya had the chance to respond, the show’s producer jumped in and asked, “Have you ever found yourself wishing that you were with your other partner one night?”
Alysia said she has, noting that if she is “fighting with one” she doesn’t want to sleep next to them.
“But it’s my night and it’s Taya’s and the other one’s night,” she shared. “Honestly if you’re in a fight with somebody, I don’t want to be around you necessarily. But we’ve always talked about if you don’t want to sleep next to that person, go sleep on the couch. You’re not gonna interrupt the other person’s night because that’s their own relationship and it’s not fair to the other relationship.”
Polyfamily premieres on TLC Tuesday, April 29, at 10 p.m. ET.
