‘They Want to Make a Great Movie’

Mia Goth is still optimistic about the Marvel Blade movie with Mahershala Ali.

Speaking with Deadline at the premiere of MaXXXine, Goth was asked if she could give any kind of update regarding Marvel Studios‘ Blade, a project that was initially announced in July 2019 but has since undergone multiple delays and rewrites.

“They really care, they do,” Goth said. “They want to make a great movie. That’s the sense that I get from them, and that feels good.”

According to a June 2024 article from The Hollywood Reporter, one version of Blade’s script saw Goth playing a vampire villain named Lilith, who was hunting Blade’s daughter. This version of the movie was reportedly set in the 1920s, while the latest version is said to be set in the present day.

It’s unclear if Goth is still playing Lilith or if she’ll now be playing a new character following the latest script change.

What has happened with Marvel’s Blade movie?

Bassam Tariq was initially hired to direct Blade in September 2021; however, he dropped out of the project a year later due to creative differences and production shifts. Yann Demange was brought on to replace him, though he recently also left the project earlier this month.

At this time, no director is currently attached to Blade. Delroy Lindo and Aaron Pierre were also both going to star in the MCU movie at one point, though they have also now both dropped out.

Eric Pearson, who recently worked with Marvel on Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four, is the most recent writer who is now working on Blade. Past writers who have been involved with the project include Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Beau DeMayo, Nic Pizzolatto, Michael Starrbury, and Michael Green.

Blade is currently set to be released on November 7, 2025. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel hopes to have the script ready by the end of summer, at which point the studio will then begin searching for a new director to helm the film.
