The Rookie – The Gala

The Rookie gave us everything we wanted and more in “The Gala” — the Valentine’s Day themed episode of the week. From a major #Chenford development to Wesley pulling the most hilarious scheme, the episode is bound to become a fan favorite to frequently be revisited.

Recap:

In the cold open, Miles films a proposal, but despite Tim’s objections, it doesn’t go as planned — Tim’s grumpy expression gets caught on camera. The Valentine’s Day festivities kick off, and Bailey is on a mission to find her phone, but Nolan interrupts her search, reminding her of both the gala and the holiday.

Genny pays Tim a visit, expressing that she’s ready to date again and asking him to be her wingman at the gala. Tim, however, isn’t interested and just wants to be home by 11, but ultimately agrees. Meanwhile, Luna, who’s organizing the gala, offers discounted hotel rooms to everyone, which a lot of couples (and friends who want to have a night off) seem to take advantage of.

Grey announces “Turn In Your Ex Day” at work, and assigns Tim and Lucy together since their rookies are otherwise occupied. Lucy teases Tim about his #GrumpyCop reputation, and Miles helps set up the booth, although his back is sore from sleeping in a bed. He and Camilla are apartment hunting, which brings a sense of tension.

Graham tries asking Angela to the gala, but she’s already going with her husband, Wesley. Instead, she arranges for Graham to meet their friend, Gretchen. As the “Turn In Your Ex Day” booth sees its fair share of strange advice, Tim and Lucy can barely hide their boredom. The man they’re talking to insists they look cute together, but Lucy clarifies they’re just coworkers.

The action picks up when Nolan and Celina respond to a disturbance call involving a security guard restraining a man. He claims an escort knows the whereabouts of his missing daughter, Claudia. The investigation heats up as they learn that Claudia has ties to an apartment with some shady characters, one of whom, Anton, claims to have a daughter that might know Claudia.

Back at the booth, Tim and Lucy end up closing shop after a lack of visitors. Just as they’re about to pack up, another visitor walks up, offering some drama-filled relationship advice — reminding them of their own unresolved tension.

Later, Tim and Lucy find themselves on a stakeout in a van, betting on what illegal goods Matt might be moving. When the bust goes down, Tim is quick to shut the van door — it’s not jewelry, but a tiger. Lucy’s reaction to the discovery is pure excitement.

At the gala, things are heating up. Genny asks Lucy if she’s noticed how men scatter whenever she mentions she’s Tim’s sister. Meanwhile, Nolan and Celina’s relationship reaches a crossroads as they confront their own unresolved issues, with Nolan offering his room key to Tim and Lucy, hinting that he’s not okay.

As the night unfolds, there’s a chaotic moment when Claudia’s father storms into the gala, upset that they’re attending a party while his daughter is still missing. Nolan calms him down and takes him home. The night ends with a brief fight between Tim and a drunk guest, leaving Tim with a small cut on the back of his neck. Lucy offers to help, and the two share a charged moment — leading to a passionate encounter that feels too complicated for words.

The next morning is full of awkwardness. Tim tries to talk to Lucy, but she brushes it off as “just ex sex,” despite the tension between them.

As the episode wraps up, the investigation into Claudia’s whereabouts takes a dramatic turn when they find her beaten and brought in by the security guards. A shootout ensues at Anton’s penthouse, and Claudia reveals that she’s in a relationship with Anton’s daughter. In the midst of it all, Camilla packs her things, deciding to leave Miles and Texas to follow her own dreams.

The episode ends with Tim and Lucy sharing a quiet moment in the elevator, where she declares that what happened between them can’t happen again — leaving more unresolved emotions in their wake. Meanwhile, Nolan gets a voicemail from Bailey that she’s not coming home right away, and that they need to fix this.

Thoughts:

Well.

Where do I start?

This episode was a wild one, especially for any shippers. Tim and Lucy finally made a move. Celina got herself a date, who is a little sketch. (Why is Scott back so suddenly? Why is he blowing up her phone? I’m suspicious.) Wesley cracked me up from his first “Hehe” all the way to “Worth it.” Genny was a wonderful return. The tiger was hilarious. Turn In My Ex Day is a funny plan from Grey, especially with how much he was grinning at the idea of pairing Tim and Lucy together. Angela lost her work husband. Miles lost a girlfriend. Nolan and Bailey are not having a good time.

It’s a great episode!

NATHAN FILLION

Character of the Week: Miles Penn

Now, Miles Penn wasn’t a focus of this episode, but the insight into his relationship and his dedication to the LAPD really stood out to me. He didn’t start off as my favorite character with his cocky attitude and flirting with a superior officer right out the gate. Underneath his bravado, he’s genuinely sweet, caring, respectful, and loves his current job more than anything in the world. I think that bodes well for his future on the show.

Also, major shoutout to Luna Grey, who supported Miles when he really needed some advice, and also threw a kick-ass gala that resulted in some fan favorite moments!

Ship of the Week: Chenford

I think this portion of the article can just be filled with millions of fans screaming and it gets the point across efficiently.

Tim and Lucy gave into everything the trailers have been teasing at, and they did in fact hook up in the hotel room! But first, we got a lot of teasing of their ex status as they undertook the task of running the Turn In Your Ex booth. Everyone seems to sense that they’re meant to be together, even people who don’t know them at all, such as Scott and the man who brought his own vomit in a jar. Valentine’s Day usually isn’t the ideal scene for exes, but Tim and Lucy barely felt broken up as they gravitated towards each other all episode, teasing and flirting and making eyes at each other until the pivotal moment that they finally gave into the magnetic pull.

The morning after was awkward, but it made it clear that Tim is obviously hoping for more when it comes to Lucy. He seems a little too scared to say anything as the one who broke them up in the first place, but his agreement that it didn’t mean anything and didn’t require a conversation was forced and pained.

The elevator was quick to remedy the awkwardness, though, showing that Tim and Lucy can easily fall back into their flirty banter. They agree they can’t do that again…but will they follow through?
