The Last Airbender’ Season 2 Gets a Fiery Update From Daniel Dae Kim

One of the stars in Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender show just provided an explosive update on the series. The first season of the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series was met with some skepticism from fans, but it was mostly regarded as a faithful adaptation that proved worthy of another season. The show is based on the original animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender, which is universally hailed as one of the best TV shows of all time. Netflix even brought in an all-new cast to bring the live-action iteration to life. Daniel Dae Kim, who portrays the ruthless Fire Lord Ozai in the show, recently spoke with ScreenRant at an NYU Tisch Gala red carpet event, and he was asked if Season 2 is bigger than Season 1:

“It does. It’s very different. We’re on location a lot more, and season 3, which we’re about to start, is even bigger than season 2.“

The first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender follows Aang (Gordon Cormier), an airbender Avatar who wakes up in an iceberg after 100 years to find the world is now at war. With the help of Katara (Kiawentiio) and Sokka (Ian Ousley), the Aang gang sets out on a mission to find someone to teach Aang waterbending, the first element for him to learn in his cycle as the avatar. Along the way, the crew runs into Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu), son of Firelord Ozai, and his Uncle Iroh (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee), who attempt to capture the avatar and bring him back to the Fire Nation to restore Zuko’s honor. Fire Lord Ozai is not in Season 1 of the animated series, and his inclusion in Season 1 of the live-action show is one of many changes that showrunner Albert Kim made.

When Is ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Season 2 Coming Out?

Netflix has not yet announced when Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 will debut on the platform, but most fans are expecting it sometime next year. According to Daniel Dae Kim, the team is getting ready to move into production on Season 3, meaning Season 2 is likely set to wrap soon. While this leaves a lot of time between production wrap and release, there is much work to do with visual effects and CGI to bring a story like this to life that takes place in a fictional world and features powers like bending.
