The Agency Season 2’s Returning Character Breaks A 19-Year Career Trend For One Actor

WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for The Agency season 1.The anticipated second season of Michael Fassbender’s CIA thriller series The Agency breaks a nearly 20-year streak for one of its key supporting cast members. Following the release of The Agency season 1’s finale on January 24, 2025, The Agency season 2 is already in development and will continue streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime. Fassbender and most of The Agency‘s cast are set to return for the second season, which could return as soon as Fall 2025.

Fassbender’s CIA agent, code-named Martian, finds himself in a compromising mess after getting pulled out of his six-year undercover mission in Ethiopia. Similar to his character in David Fincher’s recent hitman movie The Killer, Fassbender offers a chilling and calculated performance as an espionage mastermind whose Achilles heel is Samia (Jodie Turner-Smith), the woman he fell in love with while undercover. Martian also works alongside fellow intelligence agents, such as John Magaro’s Owen, to help find a potentially kidnapped operative at the CIA headquarters in London.

The Agency Season 2 Marks The First Time John Magaro Returns To A TV Show In A Main Role

Magaro Previously Appeared In Various Episodes/Seasons

In The Agency, Magaro plays CIA operations manager Owen. Like Katherine Waterson’s Naomi, Owen oversees, trains, and handles CIA field agents from the relative safety of his desk, assisting them with intel, missions, resources, and other various needs. While Magaro is best known for his roles in critically acclaimed films such as September 5 (2024), Past Lives (2023), and The Big Short (2015), he has also appeared in notable TV shows such as The Umbrella Academy and Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.

The Agency Episode 10 Review: I’m Scared For Martian After The Action-Packed Finale’s Game-Changing Decision

The Agency season 1 ends with its most action-heavy episode yet, and the finale does a great job of wrapping up storylines and setting up the future.

With the confirmed renewal of The Agency, Magaro will return as a key character in a major series for the first time since Netflix’s celebrated series Orange Is the New Black. While Magaro held a supporting role in OITNB as Vince Muccio, he appeared in only several episodes across four seasons, including three consecutive seasons from 2015 to 2017. Before his upcoming return in The Agency, Magaro’s characters in shows like The Good Wife and Crisis in Six Scenes were similarly either limited to one season or had sporadic guest appearances rather than being recurring characters.

What Could Happen With John Magaro’s Owen In The Agency Season 2

Magaro’s Owen will likely have a more prominent role in the second season after his quick thinking helped the CIA complete their high-stakes mission to extract a kidnapped operative out of Russian-occupied Ukraine. Owen is the handler of the missing operative code-named Coyote (Alex Reznik) and is the only one who can identify him, which he successfully does through a top secret control room in London. It’s also implied in the season finale that Owen and Blair (Ambreen Razia) may start a top-secret mission of their own in the form of an in-office romance in The Agency season 2.
