Take Your Child to the Library Day – explore fun activities at your local library

AN ability to concentrate, cognitive development, improved language skills, creativity and improved literacy skills are just a few of the benefits of reading.

With Saturday, February 3 being Take Your Child to the Library Day, parents and guardians are encouraged to take their children to their local libraries.

Nadine Lipman and Caitlin Augusta are co-chairpersons of the Take Your Child to The Library Day intuitive. Lipman created the idea to make a fun way to bring community awareness to the library and all the resources and events that are held there throughout the year. The first day was celebrated in 2011 and has grown to include libraries all over the country.

Many libraries are right up to speed with technology and have both digital and hard-copy offerings. You may find movies and music offerings, as well.

Your local library is the ideal place for children to play, discover, make friends and have fun. Take Your Child to the Library Day is the perfect time to discover some library magic.

New Germany librarian Pamela Govender encouraged people to make use of this day.

“The day is a great opportunity to teach kids about all of the many free learning resources public libraries provide, from books and games to after-school programs. Most municipal libraries offer a reading hour, and there are educational games as well as craft.

“We also have the bookworm club, and parents are encouraged to get their children to join as early as possible,” she added.

It is said an important step in developing good reading skills is introducing your child to reading as early as possible.

“Most kids will officially learn to read between the ages of five and seven. The sooner they can begin to make the connection between the spoken and written word, the better their reading comprehension is likely to be.”
