A couple of months ago it was reported that Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie was “dead.” Well, it turns out that rumor wasn’t true. The filmmaker recently confirmed that his Star Wars movie, which was first announced in 2020, is still in development.
While talking with Entertainment Tonight, Waititi explained that he’s working on several projects and he’s taking his time with his Star Wars project, so he can get it right. His exact quote reads:
“At the moment, I’m still developing something with them. Like me, they have a lot of projects going on. I think they’re gonna push it until I finish these other projects. I’ve got about four other scripts that I’m trying to finish. My thing is I want to take my time with that and get it right. I don’t want to rush this movie.”
So, if Waititi’s Star Wars project ever does happen, it’s not going to be for a long time. If he is looking to make those four other projects first, he won’t get around to Star Wars for another seven or eight years.
Waititi previously explained that he is looking to create something new with the franchise and expand the universe beyond all of the characters and locations that we’re familiar with. The filmmaker has offered updates on the project over the past couple of years.
The filmmaker also has said that he’s still trying to figure out an idea for the movie and that he’s “still throwing everything at the wall.” He later explained that he still hasn’t quite figured out his idea and he’s not even 100% confident that his movie is going to happen. Now it seems like he still has finished his script.
Waititi later explained that he was stuck on the “middle part” and added: “I’ve got a really good idea for it. It’s just as with all films, it’s this middle part. You’re like, ‘What’s going to happen?’ And then you look at all of those films that are so great, you’re like, ‘Well, I guess they can’t meet some smuggler with an alien sidekick.’“
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy talked about the project earlier this year saying the project will get made “one day.” So, maybe it will get made one day, just like Rian Johnson’s Star Wars project.
First things first, Lucasfilm has to release another new Star Wars film at some point! We just have no idea what that first Star Wars film since The Rise of Skywalker will be. We’ll find out one day!
