Sumter County employee accused of stealing from county

The sheriff’s office says they found 16 instances of fees being taken but not accounted for.

SUMTER, Ga. — A Sumter County employee is accused of siphoning funds from the county, and now, she’s facing 16 felony theft charges, according to a press release from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

Heather Nicole Beamon used to work for the county’s code enforcement. As part of her job as a code enforcement officer, Beamon would collect fees for building permits and business licenses.

But the press release says authorities uncovered multiple instances of her allegedly not depositing those funds and instead keeping some of the money for herself.

On Tuesday, they say Beamon turned herself into the sheriff’s office. She had previously confessed to one instance of theft, but the sheriff’s office says that is not where the alleged theft stopped.

“Over the following weeks, as the investigation continued, fifteen additional instances were revealed where cash was received and not deposited or accounted for,” the press release said.

They say “there are likely more instances other than the sixteen” cases that they have found.

“However, due to the lack of and missing copies of receipts, the full scope of this endeavor can not be determined,” the press release said.

They ask anyone who have any information can contact the sheriff’s office at 229-924-4094. They also say they’re looking for people who have paid case for permits or licenses.

The case is still under investigation.
