SteamWorld Build – How To Repair Mineshafts And Unlock Doors

SteamWorld Build mineshafts and doors allows you to explore underground areas further. This leads to discovering more treasures and reaching new floors. Of course, you also have to meet certain requirements before you can complete these tasks. Our guide discusses how to repair mineshafts and unlock doors in SteamWorld Build.

How to repair mineshafts and unlock doors in SteamWorld Build

You can unlock mineshafts and doors in SteamWorld Build once you have access to them in a particular mine level/floor. Here’s a quick summary:

  • Mineshafts require you to meet certain requirements to fully repair the structure.
  • Locked doors, meanwhile, can be opened by interacting with three levers, which you’ll find if you follow the colored wires.

How to repair the initial mineshaft

Your can repair the main mineshaft in SteamWorld Build once you have the following:

  • 8x Boards – Requires you to have Foresters and a Lumber Mill.
  • 1,200 Money – Comes from residential buildings.
  • Train Station connection – Build a road that leads directly to the Train Station.
  • 18x Engineers – Make sure to satisfy Workers’ needs so you can upgrade them into Engineers.

Once you’ve fully repaired the mineshaft, you’ll gain access to the first underground area, the Dusty Caverns. You can switch to this by pressing “2” on your keyboard.

You should be able to repair the initial mineshaft within the first hour of starting your run.

How to find the activation levers for locked doors

Once you have access to the Dusty Caverns in the mines, you’ll be able to unlock doors in SteamWorld Build. First, look at the three wires that are connected to levers. This means exploring the mine further and excavating sections with your assigned Miners until you discover all three.

There are times when the levers themselves are readily seen, so just click on the objects to activate them. However, there may be sections that are inaccessible, which means you’ll have to find a means of reaching those areas. Here are some examples:

  • Miners can’t carve through bedrock, so you need to find another way around these obstacles.
  • Several chasms also exist, so you need to build Bridges that are found in the Infrastructure tab. Bridges themselves require you to have at least 200 Engineers.

How to repair mineshafts that take you to other floors

Generally speaking, unlocking a door in the mines leads to yet another mineshaft in SteamWorld Build. You’ll discover a tunnel that you can clear out with your Miners. From there, you should see a mineshaft that takes you to the second underground level.

You'll have to repair underground mineshafts if you want to reach the next floors.
