Star Wars secretly confirmed Luke Skywalker’s connection to the Force is just as strong as his father’s, making them equals. In the months preceding Return of the Jedi, it’s recently been confirmed that Luke and Darth Vader had an encounter via the Force that transcended both time and space. To that end, this unique encounter carries some key implications regarding Luke’s own connection to the Force as the son of Anakin Skywalker.

As seen in the new and canonical Star Wars comics set in the aftermath of The Empire Strikes Back, Luke has been continuing his Jedi training while seeking to learn all he can to face his father once more. This includes the discovery of various kyber crystals setting up the construction of Luke’s green-bladed lightsaber as seen in Return of the Jedi. However, a piece of crimson kyber puts Luke directly in contact with his father via the power of the Force, one that also connects to Darth Vader’s earliest days as a Sith lord.

Luke Skywalker Encountered Darth Vader In The World Between Worlds

Battling Across Time and Space

The World Between Worlds Star Wars

As seen in 2018’s Darth Vader #25 by Charles Soule and Giuseppe Camuncoli set in the aftermath of Revenge of the Sith, Darth Vader attempted to bring his wife back from the dead via a mystical journey through the Force itself, using a locus of dark side energy on Mustafar. Following Padmé’s refusal to join him within this Force nexus, Vader was confronted by a being composed of blue energy who forced him back to the physical realm.

Now, 2023’s Star Wars #35 by Charles Soule and Madibek Musbekov confirms that Luke was this being of blue energy in Darth Vader’s past. Despite being set decades later in the aftermath of The Empire Strikes Back, Luke entered this same cosmic plane where he faced his father. As such, this does support the idea that both Luke and Vader entered the World Between Worlds as seen in Star Wars Rebels and Ahsoka (or at least an incredibly similar Force nexus), having transcended time and space to encounter each other’s spiritual forms in the Force.

Luke & Darth Vader Are Mirror Images Of One Another

Luke and Vader Forced Each Other Out Of The Nexus

Regardless of the exact nature of this Force nexus, it does confirm that Luke’s power in the Force is on par with his father’s. Existing as mirrors to each other, the new panel in Star Wars #35 hammers this idea home, effectively being a mirror image of the original panel from Darth Vader #25, showing that they each were strong enough to push the other out of the nexus and back into the physical realm. While Darth Vader may have more experience using the Force than his son, this does suggest that Luke’s inherent connection to the Force itself is just as strong.

As the son of the Chosen One, it makes sense that Luke’s connection and potential to use the Force would be quite powerful, even if his training was largely unconventional. Furthermore, it’s quite impressive to see Luke’s Force form of pure blue while his father’s form which is more of a chaotic red and black, representing the dark side. However, he’s also surrounded by small blue butterflies, seemingly teasing the glimmers remaining good still within him, setting up his eventual redemption in Return of the Jedi.

Luke & Anakin Really Are Yin & Yang

Both Sides Of The Same Coin

Luke and Anakin Yin and Yang Star Wars

This lesser-known confrontation between Luke and Darth Vader epically points to the concept that both Luke and his father Anakin were a living yin-yang during the Galactic Civil War. Together, they were the powerful light and powerful dark that culminated in the restoration of balance in the Force in the Star Wars galaxy. As such, the fact that they forced each other out of what was likely the World Between Worlds is quite impressive, confirming Luke’s equal status to Anakin’s Chosen as the galaxy’s New Hope.
