Sourcebooks to match Binc funds for Hurricane Helene survivors

Following last week’s announcement that the Binc Foundation and Macmillan Publishers were partnering up to raise funds for bookstore and comics shops retailers/employees affected by Hurricane Helene. The charity has revealed a second matching gift from Illinois-based publisher Sourcebooks (owned by Penguin Random House). Like Macmillan, Sourcebooks will donate proceeds of up to $10,000 for any funds raised by Binc.

Dominique Raccah, publisher and CEO of Sourcebooks, added, “We’re incredibly grateful to Binc for their crucial work. Sourcebooks is proud to uplift our bookselling partners in any way we can, and we hope our support helps local booksellers and their families in this time of great need for so many communities.” The news comes at an especially urgent time, with an even stronger hurricane, Hurricane Milton, set to hit Florida today.

Binc states that, as of Monday, October 7, they had received 34 calls for help from 11 stores and 23 individuals in the southeastern United States. Executive Director Pam French said, “We hear from more book and comic people every day, and we know from experience that the need will continue to grow as the waters recede, power and cell phone signals return, damage can be assessed, and the cleanup begins. We are especially grateful for the support of our friends at Sourcebooks as we watch a second hurricane take aim at Florida.” They are also offering free mental health aid to anyone who needs it.

Florida-based publisher Mad Cave Studios have also donated $10,000 to Binc’s relief efforts. “This donation will help provide immediate relief to retailers facing unforeseen financial and medical hardships caused by the disaster,” they said. At the time of writing, Hurricane Helene, which swept across the southeast during the week of September 26, has claimed the lives of over 230 people in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee, making it the deadliest mainland hurricane since Katrina in 2005, while hundreds more are still missing.
