Someone’s In the Kitchen With Gavin

Gavin Rossdale in the kitchen in a leather apron is not what comes to mind when picturing the Bush frontman. But that’s where Rossdale has positioned himself in his new culinary talk series, Dinner with Gavin Rossdale, which premiered on Vizio’s WatchFree+ on February 13 with six episodes.

Rossdale invites celebrity pals to his showplace home in Los Angeles where the self-taught chef effortlessly prepares a gourmet, multiple-course meal for them in his sleek, if spare, kitchen. Rossdale’s ease in this environment and his practiced moves handling all manner of ingredients while wielding professional kitchen gadgets, is astounding. Rossdale narrates his actions, giving explanations and tips, demonstrating an expert understanding of flavors, seasonings and techniques. “Küchenprofi 12-Inch Tweezer Tongs in 18/10 Stainless Steel,” he says, naming an essential kitchen too. “Keeps my hands out of the food.”

As he meticulously plates Instagram-worthy dishes, Rossdale chats to his guests, which include Serena Williams (to whom he gifts a pair of the aforementioned tweezer tongs), Selma Blair, Common, Brooke Shields, Tom Jones and Jack McBrayer. This one-on-one exchange around food with strategic mood lighting has a casualness that brings with it a voyeuristic feel. No topic is taboo and oversharing is not unexpected. Sometimes, the visit even devolves into an impromptu musical performance, like when. Williams belts out a mean rendition of “Comedown.” Other times, it evolves into a game of ping pong.

While Rossdale takes into consideration his guests’ food preferences and restrictions, and provides some health-conscious selections on request, he is not afraid of some fat and sugar. Case in point, this decadent Basque cheesecake recipe he shares with SPIN.

Gavin Rossdale’s Basque Cheesecake Recipe

Ingredients:

  • Cream cheese: 26.5 oz (about 3 1/3 cups)
  • White sugar: 1 cup
  • Vanilla extract: as desired
  • Heavy cream: 1 3/4 cups
  • Eggs: 5 whole
  • Sour cream: 3 tbsp
  • Salt: a pinch
  • All-purpose flour (sifted): 1/4 cup

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Batter:
    • Blend the cream cheese, white sugar, vanilla extract, heavy cream, eggs, sour cream, and a pinch of salt together until smooth and creamy.
    • Gradually add the sifted all-purpose flour, mixing gently until fully incorporated.
  2. Prepare the Pan:
    • Line a 9-inch springform pan with parchment paper, buttering the paper to prevent sticking. Make sure the parchment paper extends slightly above the rim of the pan.
  3. Bake the Cheesecake:
    • Pour the prepared batter into the lined pan.
    • Place the pan at the base of the oven, far from the heat source above.
    • Broil on high for 50 minutes to 1 hour, keeping an eye on the top. The goal is for the top to become blackened while the center remains jiggly.
  4. Cool and Serve:
    • Allow the cake to cool to room temperature.
    • Refrigerate overnight if possible, to let it fully set.
    • If you can’t wait, you can enjoy it immediately—oozy and creamy!
