AVERY KAPLAN: After watching Rebecca Oliver Kaplan devour Ghost Book by Remy Lai for Weekend Reading the week before last, my interest regarding the graphic novel is piqued. So naturally, I’ll be checking that out this weekend. Then, as far as prose goes, I’m finishing up The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo. After getting into this author via Ninth House and its sequel Hell Bent, I was tipped-off to this standalone novel by Bardugo via Samantha Puc. Friends, I am not disappointed. I recommend you check out her work if you haven’t yet!
DEAN SIMONS: It took some doing but I continue to make solid headway in my catchup with the monthly 2000 AD spinoff, the Judge Dredd Megazine. Having started from September 2020, I now reach the X-Mas 2021 issue (#439), which kicks off a fresh batch of stories. I’m particularly keen to read the next series of Dan Abnett & Phil Winslade’s space-western Lawless, and try out brand-new serial Death Cap, by T.C. Eglington & Boo Cook. Less than 30 issues until I am up to date!
TAIMUR DAR: Writer Brian Michael Bendis has been chronicling his experience working on the ill-fated Spider-Man musical in Fortune & Glory: The Musical comic with artist BIll Walko. The complete graphic novel will be collected in TPB format this October, but the full thing is available on Bendis’ recently launched Jinxworld site for paid subscribers. Most of it I had already read in chapter format on Bendis’ previous Substack newsletter, but I want to read it in its entirety in one sitting over the weekend.
KRISTINA ELYSE BUTKE: I had a special book come in the mail from Fantagraphics–The Heart of Thomas by Moto Hagio. I have read Hagio’s previous work A Cruel God Reigns which was a devastating emotional journey, and I had learned about Heart of Thomas from Twitter (X) through the several BL fans I follow. Fantagraphics doesn’t classify this as BL but instead a “shoujo classic,” and it too seems tragic as it deals with the death of Thomas, who falls from a pedestrian overpass to his death, leaving behind a mysterious letter to a classmate. I’m ready for my heart to be broken.
