The first weekend in 2024 has arrived, and with it has come Weekend Reading 192! While it may be a whole new year, we’re still holing up in Stately Beat Manor and getting lost in a good book.

AVERY KAPLAN: This weekend, I’m reading the other prose book that was gifted to me for Xmas by Rebecca Oliver Kaplan: The Bathysphere Book: Effects of the Luminous Ocean Depths by Brad Fox. Then as far as comics goes, I’m checking out City of Dragons: Rise of the Shadowfire by Jaimal Yogis & Vivian Truong. Dragons in Paris? Sold.
TAIMUR DAR: December ended up being a busy month for me, so I didn’t get as much time to relax and enjoy books, TV, movies, etc. as I’d like. So I’m rectifying that with start of the new year. Kicking it off by reading a book that’s been on my list for months, Opposable Thumbs: How Siskel & Ebert Changed Movies Forever by Matt Singer. I’ve heard nothing but great things and it’s a subject that deserves to be told so I am quite eager to read it.
DEAN SIMONS: New year, new novel! Just started The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida by Shehan Karunatilaka. It won the Booker Prize in 2022 and follows the ghost of a photographer who has seven days to solve the mystery of his murder in the midst of the Sri Lankan civil war. One of the really interesting aspects of the book is that it is written entirely in the second person.
KRISTINA ELYSE BUTKE: I recently finished My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness by Kabi Nagata and was so touched by her depiction of depression–I really saw myself in her when it came to mental illness as I am currently dealing with my own bout of depression. For this weekend I’ll be reading her sequels, My Solo Exchange Diary volumes one and two, which explores Nagata trying to make her way in the world, navigate friendships and relationships, self-acceptance, and of course, love.
REBECCA OLIVER KAPLAN: Lately, I’ve been making use of my NetGalley advanced copy review account A LOT. It’s the new year, and I’m excited to check out all the new books and graphic novels coming out in 2024. To begin, I downloaded Eddie Ahn’s graphic memoir Advocate: A Graphic Memoir of Family, Community, and the Fight for Environmental Justice about being an environmental justice attorney and activist in San Francisco, California, which comes out in April 2024 from Ten Speed Press. I was one class shy of a environmental law and toxic torts certification when I graduated law school, and even considered being an environmental justice lawyer before the US legal system broke me, so Ahn’s account speaks to me.
