For those unfamiliar with the series, here’s a synopsis

“When was the last time I played a game that wasn’t crap?” This is a world in the near future where games that use display screens are classified as retro. Anything that can’t keep up with state-of-the-art VR technology is called a “crap game,” and you see a large number of crap games coming out. Those who devote their lives to clearing these games are called “crap-game hunters,” and Rakuro Hizutome is one of them. The game he’s chosen to tackle next is Shangri-La Frontier, a “god-tier game” that has a total of thirty million players. Online friends… An expansive world… Encounters with rivals… These are changing Rakuro and all the other players’ fates! The best game adventure tale by the strongest “crap game” player begins now!”

While dedicated to adventuring in the world of the game, Shangri-La Frontier is a series as interested in gaming as the people playing it. Game design is an integral aspect to the narrative with the game creator’s becoming a part of the plot towards the end of season one. The world building in the game is so expansive that not everyone who plays is an adventurer. Monster enthusiasts, game lore enthusiasts, and murder gangs all show up throughout the show. Shangri-La Frontier offers a fairly unique take on anime centered around video games.

The first season ended with the heroes of Wolf-clan, Sunraku, Pencilgon, and Katzo, being the first gamers to defeat a unique monster, the undead cyborg Wethermon. Their victory advanced the plot of the game and opened up more opportunities for adventure. It also put a target on their backs. Everyone in the game, both heroes and villains, want to meet these players who defeated a unique monster for their own reasons. Even the creators of the game are curious as to the first players who defeated a unique monster.

This trailer promises new environments, new items, and new players. Sunraku’s NPC bunny companions Emul and Bilac get to do some damage. And it looks like Sunraku’s long time admirer Pysger-0 might finally join Wolf-clan. For fans of the show there’s a lot to be excited about in it.

For anyone who missed season one, both the sub and dub currently stream on Crunchyroll.
