Shakira revealed that the reason she was away from the spotlight for so long was due to her commitment to her then-partner, Gerard Piqué.
In an interview the Sunday Times, the singer revealed: “For a long time I put my career on hold to be next to Gerard, so he could play football.”
“There was a lot of sacrifice for love.”

She added that she used the pain from the recent breakdown of her marriage in her upcoming album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, translating to Women No Longer Cry.
She said the new music represents “the transformation of pain into creativity, frustration into productivity, anger into passion, vulnerability into resilience.
“There were so many pieces of my life that crumbled in front of my eyes and I had to rebuild myself in a way, picking up the bones from the floor and putting them all together. And the glue that kept it all together was music,” the 47-year-old reflected.

The Columbian singer first met Piqué, now 37, on the set of the music video for her song Waka Waka (This Time for Africa).
They moved to Barcelona where Piqué played for the city’s soccer team, and eventually welcomed their children Milan, 11 and Sasha, nine
In June 2022, the couple announced their separation in a joint statement.

“We regret to confirm that we are separating. We ask for privacy at this moment for the well-being of our children, who are our maximum priority. Thank you in advance for your understanding and respect,” they said.
During their relationship, the Hips Don’t Lie singer only coached on The Voice US and put out one album, El Dorado, spending most of her time focusing on her children.
Soon after, it was reported that Piqué allegedly cheated on the singer with his now girlfriend, Clara Chia Marti, 23.

In response to the rumoured infidelity, Shakira released a song with producer Bizarrap titled Shakira Bzrp Music Sessions #53 which seemed to take aim at her ex and his new girlfriend.
The song is laden with references to the pair’s relationship, hidden with word play.
Some of the lyrics include, “This is for me to mortify you, chew and swallow so it doesn’t sting, I won’t return to you any more even if you cry or beg me.
