The gang is getting back together!
Following the success of Deadpool & Wolverine this past summer, Ryan Reynolds said he is writing a new movie that will reunite him with costar Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy.
The catch? It won’t be a Deadpool sequel.
“I’m spending the year writing,” Reynolds told Variety in a podcast interview set for release this week. “I’m writing a movie for myself, Hugh and Shawn to do that is not Marvel.”
Deadpool & Wolverine marked Reynolds and Jackman’s debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019. The film — which featured a plethora of cameos including Jennifer Garner, Wesley Snipes, Chris Evans and Reynolds’ wife Blake Lively — has grossed over $1 billion worldwide since its July release. (No wonder Reynolds is eager to team up with Jackman and Levy again!)
While promoting the Marvel blockbuster, Reynolds, 48, and Jackman, 56, put their close friendship on full display. The Deadpool actor shared that his and Lively’s children — James, 9, Inez, 8, Betty, 5, and Olin — even call Jackman “Uncle Hugh.”
“They’re all kind of in love with Uncle Hughy over here, so that worked out pretty well,” Reynolds told Extra in a joint interview with Jackman at the Deadpool & Wolverine premiere in New York City in July. “He got attacked by Betty backstage, who thinks she has claws, so she goes at him. I have to actually give her a little tiny time-out.”
Reynolds previously teased that he wants to continue working with Jackman when he shared an Instagram post commemorating Jackman’s 56th birthday in October.
“I hope we get to do this til we’re 90,” Reynolds captioned a series of photos of him and his costar. “Happy Birthday, @thehughjackman. A lot of years. A lot of adventures.”
Reynolds also has a long-lasting relationship with Deadpool 3 director, Levy. Reynolds and Levy previously worked on the movies Free Guy and The Adam Project. During the promotional tour for their latest collaboration, Levy, 56, revealed that he is little Olin’s godfather.
“Little by little, all of the Reynoldses started being a part of the movie, including their youngest,” Levy, 56, said of the Reynolds children’s cameos in Deadpool 3 in August. “As the proud godfather of Olin, that might be my favorite voice cameo.”
Olin briefly appears in Deadpool & Wolverine as Babypool, while his sister Inez appears as Kidpool. Lively, 37, makes a masked appearance as Lady Deadpool. Meanwhile, Betty is mentioned in the credits as Jackman’s “wrangler.”
