Ryan O’Neal death: Tributes flow for Love Story star following death aged 82

Stars have paid tribute to ’70s Hollywood heartthrob Ryan O’Neal, who died at age 82 today.

The news was revealed by his son Patrick, whom he shared with his second wife, Leigh Taylor-Young.

“My dad passed away peacefully today, with his loving team by his side supporting him and loving him as he would us,” Patrick, a sports broadcaster, wrote along with a lengthy tribute.

“As my father, he was second to none. The best and most loving and supportive dad, and I am just so lucky to have had him… And he supported me in my sports broadcasting career more than anyone other than my wife Summer.

“If I lacked confidence, he gave me his. And he had so much confidence. I know I made him proud, and that fills my heart. He was my biggest fan and I am really going to miss talking about my teams with him.

“This is just so hard for us. Ryan made such an impact and this will be difficult without him. This is and will be a huge void in our lives.”

O’Neal’s leading lady for two of his films, Barbra Streisand, led celebrity tributes for the star.

“So sad to hear the news of Ryan O’Neal’s passing,” she shared alongside a candid picture of them together.

“We made two films together, What’s Up, Doc? and The Main Event. He was funny and charming, and he will be remembered.”

British presenter Piers Morgan also shared his condolences, as well as an anecdote from his interview with O’Neal.

“RIP Ryan O’Neal, 82. His performance in Love Story alone was iconic. Superb actor, proper movie star, complex guy,” he wrote, before adding another tweet.

“Did a brilliant interview with Ryan O’Neal for CNN a few years ago, in which he was extraordinarily honest & emotional about his tormented private life. It was only matched by the hilarious email he sent me afterwards,” he shared, along with the email.

It read, “Following my interview with you my recurring role in Bones has been written out, my agents won’t return my calls and the Malibu City Council has launched a drive to have me move out of the city,” he joked, before adding a heartfelt, “In all seriousness, I wanted to say what a pleasure it was to spend the hour with you.”

O’Neal’s Peyton Place co-star, actress Mia Farrow, posted a simple yet touching tribute of pictures with O’Neal on set. “Rest in peace dear Ryan,” she wrote to accompany them.
